Pip pulled on her coat as she and Ravi walked into the restaurant to meet Cara and Autumn. Ravi kept a warm arm around her, but she still felt cold.
The couple entered the restaurant and Pip scanned the place for Cara. Her eyes landed on her best friend and she ran over to her.
"Cara!" Pip cried, smiling and waving.
Cara turned to see Pip and dashed over to her. The two hugged while Autumn and Ravi kinda look at each other.
"I'm so glad to see you!" Cara says, releasing Pip.
Ravi's arm secured back around Pip's shoulders as she replied, "Me too! How's school been?"
Cara made a 'tsk' sound and gestured to Autumn, "Introductions first, Pip, Jeez. Autumn, Pip. Pip, Autumn."
Pip waved to Autumn, "Hi."
Autumn replied with a wave, then she ran a hand through her dark red hair. Her skin was fair with lots of freckles coating her face. Her eyes were amber and glowed in the lightning of the restaurant.
"Do I get an introduction, Sarge?" Ravi asked, leaning down to Pip's level slightly.
She shrugged, "Cara, you already know Ravi. Autumn, this is my boyfriend, Ravi."
Autumn finally spoke, "I know about you, you're Sal's brother."
Ravi tensed slightly. Pip felt his discomfort and looked to Cara for some help. Cara noticed the look in her eye and reached to hold her girlfriend's hand.
"Can we go find a table? I'm starving." She whined.
Autumn laughed and led the group to their table. She had made the reservation earlier and was already shown to the table, but her and Cara had gone to the front to make it easier for Pip and Ravi to locate them.
The group sat down and carefully picked up the menus. Pip looked at hers tentatively, tapping her fingers on the table.
DT DT DT
"Stop." Came Ravi's soft but commanding voice, "You're doing it again."
Pip realized that she still hadn't ordered and instead was focused on her fingers tapping. She finally chose a plate of ravioli and when the waitress arrived she tried to forget about DT.
Pip asked once again how school was going for Cara and listened to her babble about college. However, she felt distant from her friend. She felt almost alone despite being surrounded by people at the table.
Autumn picked up on her discomfort, "Your mind is elsewhere." She noted.
Pip looked up at her sheepishly, "Y-yeah. Sorry."
Ravi took her hand in his and squeezed it as Cara said, "What's wrong?"
Pip shook her head, "I don't know. I just feel kinda...out of it. You know?"
Cara nodded, "Yeah, I get that. Do you want to go home?"
Pip immediately regretted saying anything and awkwardly laughed, "No, I'm okay! I'm probably not used to being back and all."
The food arrived at that point and the group ate making minimal conversation. Eventually, Autumn said in a hushed tone, "Something is wrong with this town. It doesn't feel right."
Pip felt her heart sink to her stomach.
Because she felt the same way.
