Chapter 4

Rachael's proposition

But let's hear it first. I stared at Rachael and pondered, and honesty a thousand thoughts crossed my mind within an instant and just when I started to dread the idea she might have, she said,

"How about you, come with me to London and work with my mother in her restaurants, well stepmother?"

What? I paused my tray of thought for a second, and shake my head, as if to remove something from my ears. Am I hearing wrong? "What do you mean?" I asked, excited and at the same time confused

"Well, I told you that my family owns a restaurant, technically it belongs to my step-mother and since the staff who used to watch over vegetable guarding left, she has been in search of someone, I think you would do a great job since you guys have been working on farm lands for ages, and you can also work within the restaurants while leaving with us. That's if you are interested?"

"Are you kidding me? Why wouldn't I be interested, but you think she will agree?"

"Of course, the last few staff she employed were from Africa, so I think she will, most especially if I told her your occupation here, she will love it."

"Oh My God, if I can leave this place and go out to do some real job, it will be a dream come true. But when are you leaving, I have to go work on my papers and other things which could probably take a month or two...."

"Wow, wow, 'a month or two' Mary, I only have two weeks here."

"What, so quick?" this is bad

"Well, I have been here for close to two months, dad wants me to return home. The only reason I still have two weeks here is that I have been delaying it and dad threaten to come down here himself if I don't return and mom, on the other hand, is bringing down my head to hurry home but why are you worried about that?."

"Oh nothing really," we that be the case, I won't be able to make it; how will I get the money to get the papers in such a short time, I pondered

"Mary?" she hollered

"Oh yes!"

"What is the matter? You are suddenly quiet."

"Oh.... It just I might need more than two weeks to get the papers ready and the money for the ....."

"That, don't worry about it," she said, cutting me off and giving me a friendly pat on the back, "I will see what I can help you with."

"Oh it's all right; I don't want to bother with that."

"Hahahaha nonsense Mary, you and I are best friends and besides, I won't be doing it for free, you will pay me back of course."

"It's comforting to know that sides of you haven't changed."

"I know right."

We sat down together laughing at the old times, and before I know it, the day went to sleep, ah; I need to go home before mom starts looking for me.

"It's getting late, I should start heading home," I said

"Me too." She replied, "do you have a phone, so we should contact each other."

I stared at her like someone at of a move, "Ugu don't even ask."

"You are kidding, right? Then how do you keep in contact with friends?"

"Oh Rachael," I said pushing myself up from the bench "you should have asked if I had any, to begin with." I smiled sadly

"Now I am starting to get the picture of why you need to be more expose to the outside before you become someone else mother without giving birth."

"You are a bitch, you know that, right?"

"Oh, great, you can cause now, that good."

Ahhhhh! I almost forgot that she can be a pain in the ass, "I am going this way, what about you?"

"I am going the other way. So for now discuss it with your parents and in two weeks get prepared, I will be coming for you."

"Hahaha, what?" I couldn't control it and I just laugh at her wordings, she was always terrible at it.

"What is son funny that made you tear up?"

"Nothing, just now you sounded like a prince coming for his princess." I laughed again

"Seriously, Mary, your sense of irony is always the worst. But anyway see you in two weeks." She said that and left

I stood staring at her back until it disappears into the shadow cast by the restaurant's light. I turned on my heels and head home. My heart beat hard against my chest when I thought about telling my parents of Rachael's proposer, it's going to be one hell of a night.

"No Mary everything is going to be okay." I encourage myself.
