I sat down on my bed and glanced at my already-packed bag, well, not that there was much to pack.
Tomorrow I will be leaving for London, and Mom was still yet to come around.
Seriously, that woman can be stubborn, but one of us has to go down for the other, and since she wasn't ready to acknowledge that she was wrong, I need to be the mature one and settle this once and for all. She is my mother, no matter what, I know for a fact that she was trying to protect me but come on.
I pushed myself up, put on my confident face, and walked out of my room. When I got to the sitting room, Mom was on the sofa, deep in thought. I approached her.
"Mother, do you have time? I would like to speak with you." I said, looking at her expression
"If you are not here to tell me that you have turned down the proposer, then please leave me be."
Ignoring her cold tone, I sighed and sat close to her on the sofa, I placed my hands on hers. "Mother, why don't you trust me? I am your daughter; I would never do anything to put you or Papa in a place where you have to hang your head in shame. And I know you are against the idea of me going to London not because you don't care but because you do. So, I am asking you to have faith in me. I will be alright, I promise. Please, mama, I don't want to leave with things unsettled between us." I said with a sad face.
Mother turned to me. "So, you know that I am trying to protect you and not stop you from achieving your dream? You are my daughter and I love you so much, I don't want you to get hurt. You will be all alone there." She said with a sad face.
"Don't worry, Mother; I won't be alone and Yes, I know and I promise you that I will be very careful. I won't work at night, I won't go out with dangerous people or too dangerous please, and I will always watch for the kind of jobs and company I keep. Just like you taught us, please!" I smiled at her
"As long as you promise to call home, every day, not every two hours, and when things don't work out there, you will come back home."
"I promise I will." I smiled looking at her. "Is that a yes?"
"Well, do I have a choice? Your father has refused to talk to me for the past days, simply because I refused to give you my blessings, so yes."
I jumped up in excitement and hugged her tightly. "Thank you, thank you so much, Mother, I will make you proud."
"Of course, you will, you don't have any choice." She laughed and patted me on the back. "Now go finish packing your bags. You said she would be coming to pick you up by noon?"
"Yes."
"Then go finish with your things; you never can tell how early she will be here, despite saying noon."
"Yes, mother me ....." Suddenly the door burst open, and standing at the threshold was Rachael, Shocked, I stared at her, "Oh, my God! Rachael, you are here," I walked over to her then paused, "Wait, you are not supposed to be here now, are you?"
"So that's Rachael?" Mother sighed "Will it kill you to ring the bell before forcing the door open?"
"Well, Mrs. Johnson I would have done so if there was a doorbell, to begin with." She smiled annoyingly,
I almost forget that those two are like cats and mice but wait "Rachael why are you here, You were supposed to come to pick me up, by noon tomorrow."
She signed, "Well, yes, but I'm sorry there has been a change of plans."
My heart skipped a bit, as I stared at Rachel's apologetic expression, and I slumped.
I knew it; I knew things were going too smoothly for me. It was too good to be true.
Guess this is where my dreams end.
