All I could do was stare back at him, no words forming on my tongue. A disarray of thoughts surged through my mind and I didn't even know where to begin with them all. My perspective shifted once I saw the sadness and fear on Kieran's face. I'd never seen him anything other than arrogant and overly confident, so to see true emotion on his face, was jarring.
"Do you understand me now?" Kieran asked, his gray eyes searching mine. "You may not trust me, I get that. But, trust in the fact that I love my daughter more than anyone, and standin' here, arguing with you, is wasting all the time I have to help her."
I swallowed my unease, still unable to say anything to him. Alaric released his hold on me and my arms remained at my sides. My fists clenched, I didn't like Kieran, but I respected him more now. He'd chosen to protect something he loved and I'd all but forced him to reveal who she was to us.
My stomach churned at the thought, cursing myself internally for not being able to control my reactions. It was as if I were a damn hormonal teenager all over again. But, I wasn't a teenager anymore, I was a grown man, and grown men admitted their faults.
I cleared my throat and offered Kieran my hand, "I'm sorry."
Kieran didn't hesitate, he took my hand in his and shook it, "I'm sorry too. I shouldn't have provoked you the way that I did. You were defending Cheyenne and I can't be mad about that."
I had to convince myself I wasn't going to choke on my words before they ever made their way out of my mouth. "Let me help you. It's the least I can do."
Kieran didn't argue, only nodded, "Fine with me."
We broke our connection and Cheyenne put herself between Kieran and me. I breathed her in, letting her scent replace Kieran's, and tried to settle myself. I had to focus. Whatever was going on with me would have to be put on the back burner for now.
Cheyenne's hand found Kieran's chest to get his attention, "Alaric and I are coming too."
Kieran shook his head, "Oh no, you ain't."
"Yes, we are." Cheyenne said as she held her ground, "Kieran, I owe you."
"You don't owe me nothin' and I'm not about to let you put yourself in danger for the likes of me." He argued, "I don't know what we're getting into, but rest assured that it involves other vampires, and they can't know about you. As soon as they realize what you are, then every other monster on this planet will too. Your existence is their biggest threat, don't doubt what they'll do to eliminate it."
Cheyenne straightened her spine and held her chin high, "Then we'll make sure there are no vampires left alive to tell the others what they've seen."
I glanced over at Alaric, who was watching Cheyenne intently. It was clear he didn't like the idea of Cheyenne being near anything dangerous, but the pride in his eyes was unmistakable. Her display of boldness further proved that she was right where she was meant to be, with us, by his side.
