the next morning, punz and karl were standing at the group's usual meeting spot waiting for the others. dream had messaged the group chat a few minutes prior to let them know he and george would be late because the brunette had slept in, to which punz had made some inappropriate joke that earned him a playful glare from karl.
from the end of the hall, the brunette caught a glimpse of ranboo walking into the school, towering over the other students. and no more than a few seconds later he saw a tired-looking sapnap dragging behind his best friend.
dream, george, and sapnap were the first three in the group. they were an inseparable trio until the blonde started getting the hots for the older, sapnap encouraging them to meet up more without him so dream could make his move. nick had always been selfless like that.
not long after, punz joined their group, sort of just inviting himself into the circle after getting close with dream in a couple of their lessons.
skip a few months and ranboo enters the story.
he'd moved schools midway through the year after settling in with a new foster family. the brunette was very insecure which lead him to originally wear a mask and sunglasses around school. on top of this, he was very intellectual for his age, his shitty childhood had forced him to mature early- so he got to skip out a year, putting him in a grade with people older than him. middle school kids were pricks- and when the 'nerdy' new kid came and refused to show his face he got a lot of shit for it.
that was, until he met sapnap. he took the younger under his wing, claiming it was because he felt bad, but realistically he had just immediately clicked with the other.
sapnap had always been opinionated, but when it came to his new best friend, his opinions often got him into fights. the worst of which being when he'd heard some kid saying "i mean his freakish body is enough, i'm glad he wears a mask."... which resulted in his head getting smashed into a locker under sapnap's mercy.
after that kids stopped messing with ranboo, and he and the ravenette became attached at the hip.
finally, there's karl.
karl had always taken to isolating himself, for no reason other than he was just shy. and when george was sat next to karl in their art class he had found out the other didn't have friends.
less than an hour later he was dragging karl to the group because "six is a better number for a group anyway karl, i swear they'll love you." and, like george had said, they did.
on that same day karl finally felt accepted. and on that same day sapnap discovered he definitely wasn't straight.
speaking of the ravenette, he had just made his way to his boyfriend, flinging his arms around his shoulders and burying his head into the crook of the others neck.
karl giggled quietly, wrapping his arms around the others waist.
"you okay bub?" he whispered to the other, feeling the shorter's grip tighten.
"mhm" nick hummed into the others neck. "'m jus' tired."
karl pulled away from the hug, moving to hold the others sides in his hands. he worriedly looked into the others eyes, taking note of the bags "have you been taking your meds?" he questioned gently.
sapnap shook his head lightly, gaze shifting to the floor. "i don't like them." he spoke, hands still wrapped around the others neck, "they make me sad."
karl nodded sadly, pulling the other back into the embrace. he noticed the questioning eyes from their friends "we will talk about this later, okay?" he whispered to the sleepy boy in his arms.
"later like at my house after school?" the ravenette asked, pulling back from the hug to make puppy eyes at the other.
"is that just your way of inviting me round?"
the shorter grinned cheekily, chirping out a simple "yep" and receiving a laugh in response.
"well then, yes, i will come round."
"good" sapnap responded, finally detaching himself from the taller, "because my step-sisters boyfriend is coming round and i want to make it awkward for her." he smirked.
karl made his way to maths, finding his usual seat beside bad.
"darryl! you've missed so much on the server-" he started, before getting interrupted.
"listen karl, i am so sorry for interrupting, you can speak in just a moment, but i've been waiting to see you since monday and i just can't wait any longer." he started, uncontrollably smiling.
karl giggled at the other, nodding at him to continue. "go on..."
"i've written a verse for our song!" he squealed out excitedly, shaking his hands.
karl looked at him, eyebrow raised. "sing it to me." he proposes, "and it better not have any muffins!"
bad looked down at the papers in front of him, which karl saw had a multitude of scribbled out and rewritten verses. "no muffins, no muffins." he heard bad muttering to himself as he flipped through the pages, skimming over the different lines. "aha! this one has no muffins!" he exclaimed excitedly, picking up the sheet and moving to face karl. "ready?"
"ready." the fluffy haired brunette smiled
he briefly cleared his throat before singing a quiet "willy wonka, willy willy wonka, imma be your chocolatier. oompha loompha doopa dee doo-" he cut himself off abruptly "i haven't thought of the words for that bit yet." he explained, about to sing again.
"-don't put words there" karl interrupted, "i like the doopady doos." he smiled genuinely.
bad blushed a bit before starting again. "you're the one i need to have no fearrr." he trailed off quietly at the end, "that's the end of that verse." he spoke shyly, dropping the paper onto the desk.
karl saw how genuinely proud the boy was of his work, plus it was actually very good, and so, without thinking any further he spoke, "i love it darryl!"
the other ginned to himself lightly, face falling to a disappointed frown. "i'll have to change the bits about muffins but that shouldn't take too lo-"
"no no no," karl quickly stopped, seeing the heartbroken expression of the other boy "don't change it! i love the muffin idea. please keep the muffins." he spoke quickly.
"boys can you stop with the chatting please." the teacher spoke from the front of the classroom, both boys holding in their laughter.
