"You work for your goals hard enough, you achieve them. Always. Even if no one had that moral, it's a pure fact. Look at the Supreme Court Of Canada, for example, you think lawyers just get that high of a privilege straight away? Unfortunately, that seems to be so, there are people who don't achieve anything, who can't achieve anything, who deserve to achieve something more than anyone, and they try their hardest, and yet they still get denied."
"That's me."
"Goes to show how trash criminals are for sabotage, huh?"
"There are two kinds of people in games, of any kind. The winners, and the losers. There's a line between those who succeed, and the rest. There's power one simply cannot achieve, therefore why try to change that? That's how it should be, anyway. Sadly, they'll say 'When people follow their passions, it always leads to success', but that's completely a lie. Why must that be? Why can't a fish climb a tree if it desires? Why can't a bird swim the seas if it desires? Why can't a little girl become a successful lawyer if she so desires? Why must people be unworthy of a peaceful life? Why must there be those out there who suffer despair and punishment, just to bring one up to hope? Why must people do this to themselves?"
"You do this to yourself, Duncan. Heather and Tyler did this to themselves. That's why I despise Chris more than I let on. That's why I'll never truly forgive you, even if you begged. What is it that wish to achieve? Leadership. Discipline. I do not wish to see those destroy themselves and burn their futures into ashes like this. What I wish is to lead everyone here into a peaceful life, a peaceful way out where no one has to be killed for their irrational thinking. It's not despair I'm after, it's discipline. Without a leader, the whole town falls apart. You can hate your leader, but they're just being real."
"I'm being real when I say, that I don't care if anyone hates me now. Because I know that I'm always the one in the right in the end. Even when they backfire, there's nothing but good intention in what I do. So please... let me unite us and make a great civilized world here. I know I've been denied Law School over and over again, but that doesn't mean I don't know what sort of laws will unite everyone."
"I'm not some trainee, I deserve a right to be called the Ultimate Lawyer. Even if Chris doesn't see that in me, I know I can be a better ruler of this island than him. So let me help. I will play my part the very best I can. I will make sure no one else has to die in these games-"
"OH MY GOD COURTNEY, SHUT THE HELL UP!!"
I slap her hand away before she can hold mine. I don't want to hear whatever ideals she has. I just want to be left alone. We're both on the porch together in the dead of night, Courtney trying to say something 'apologetic' or, 'you need to hear this Duncan so I can fix you'. I get it! What I did was wrong! I do not need her to rub her worldview in my face!
She's not even apologizing for causing a blackout that played a part in the killing!
The entire time we've been walking up to the Lounge, this is all she's been saying. I'm sick of it.
I'm a criminal, lady! Deal with it!
"Just... you think I want to hear this? Right now?" I ask with crankiness. How can Courtney be so non-challant about two of our friends' deaths?! How?!
"Y-you're right," Courtney admits, "Sorry. I'll uh-we can talk later if you want, when you're in a better mood." When? How about if?
"Duncan, you can trust me," Courtney says as she begins to walk away to head to bed, "I know you think you can't, but what choice do you have?" Quite a bit, actually.
With that, she leaves, heading straight for bed and leaving me alone.
I just want some peace and quiet...
