A/N: So I know Toga sorta had her 'awakening' in middle school, but roll with me it's happening a smidgen later in high school but still in time for all the LOV fun ^-^
~Iris' POV~
Uncle Vlad had a long list of rules he droned on and on about on our commute to my new school. There was a ridiculous curfew, a certain grade point average I had to meet restrictions on friends, expected chores and so much more. I stopped listening about three rules in and just nodded whenever he paused for breath mid rule regurgitation. It seemed to me like he was panic prepping on how to deal with a 'delinquent teen' under his guardianship and looked up a bunch of parenting videos but somehow ended up getting either a drill sergeant or parole officer's videos on how to handle delinquent teens. I saw him frequently checking some notes he'd written as he continued spewing rules at me.
He finally ended his rant and looked at me expectantly, "understood?"
"Yep." I replied while trying my best not to roll my eyes at him. Though I hadn't heard much of what he said, I didn't expect to break any of his rules as I had no intention of making friends and was just trying to get through the rest of my first year of high school as quickly as possible.
He frowned, "can you repeat any of that back to me?"
"Not a damn thing." I smirked, "good rant though."
"Iris." He sighed, "work with me a little here."
"Yeah sure, I should be the one compromising here, it's not like I was uprooted from my home, shipped off to live with an uncle I barely know who treats me like I'm some kind of criminal in a city that's like twenty times the size of where I grew up where I know no one and now get to figure out how to navigate through a huge city where I know no one to go to a new school where I once again know no one in the middle of a semester. So yeah, I should be cutting you some slack, makes sense." I rolled my eyes, my voice dripping with sarcasm.
Uncle Vlad paused, "...I guess I did come on a little strong..." He frowned and appeared to be struggling to find the words he wanted to say next, "I'll try to lighten up a bit if you promise me you'll try to stay out of trouble and won't use your quirk under any circumstance."
"Sure thing, if a criminal with a weapon tries to kill me I'll just let it happen." I grumbled sarcastically.
"If you run into trouble, call for help." He pointed.
"I'll remember that as I'm getting stabbed or shot." I rolled my eyes and dismissively turned my head to stare out the window, done with the conversation.
Realizing he'd lost the battle, Uncle Vlad let out a sigh and we continued the rest of our commute in silence. We arrived at my new high school with plenty of time to spare and Uncle Vlad made sure to escort me to the office. I was honestly surprised he wasn't holding onto my arm and escorting me physically since he seemed intent on treating me like a criminal.
Some of my new classmates recognized my uncle, since he was a Pro Hero and gushed quietly, whispering to one another as we passed them in the halls. I groaned inwardly, the first person to ask for his autograph was getting shoved in a locker.
As we stepped into the administration office, the woman behind the front desk glanced up from her phone and her eyes widened. "Oh, you're Vlad King." She gushed excitedly before covering with an attempted flirty smile, "don't tell me you have a child attending here, you look far too young."
I felt bile rise up in the back of my throat, this was incredibly nauseating. I glanced over at my uncle and rolled my eyes as I saw that he was completely disarmed by the woman and turning red in the face. Gross.
