Two households, both alike in dignity
(In fair Verona, where we lay our scene),
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life;
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Doth with their death bury their parents' strife.
The fearful passage of their death-marked love
And the continuance of their parents' rage,
Which, but their children's end, naught could remove,
Is now the two hours' traffic of our stage;
The which, if you with patient ears attend,
What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend.🥀
In Freshman English class, Ponyboy read the part of Romeo while Margie Jacobs read for Juliet. Curly Shephard read Mercutio, and Ponyboy knew he'd never hear such tuff lines butchered that badly anywhere else. Margie made Juliet breathy and excited over everything, which Ponyboy thought was certainly a... creative choice. Romeo was a sensitive soul, a misunderstood romantic.
Ponyboy flushed red and fidgeted when he read his lines. Sometimes, it felt too real, like everyone in his class was staring straight at him while he read out some of his most embarrassing journal entries. Or worse, the poems written in his head that he dare not put on paper.
🥀
At the movie house, he found his mind drifting. Romeo's last words in his mind, over and over. He couldn't remember the entire monologue, but parts of it floated throughout his consciousness. Here's to my love! O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick.
Thus with a kiss I die.
Juliet seemed like a pretty cool broad, but Ponyboy couldn't imagine killing himself for her. Maybe if he found the right girl, but no girl in Tulsa really caught Ponyboy's eye. There were people he loved, sure, but someone he would give up everything for? Someone who caused his world to spin, the sun to shine? Girls had never interested him much, but even then, he loved the gang, and if something happened to any of them, he would be devastated, but he knew he could turn his head and see, no matter how many clouds obscured his view, the sun was still there. After all, he'd gotten through his parents dying.
Well, it hadn't been easy. That's when his nightmares started and Soda decided it would be easier to share a bed rather than cross the hall to wake him up every few hours. If Soda hadn't been there, or if something had happened to Sodapop, maybe Pony would think differently, but Ponyboy knew that no matter what, he'd have his brother and the sun would be out there and he'd be okay.
Forbidden love like Romeo and Juliet's was entertaining, but why put yourself through all that pain when you knew it couldn't last, when you knew you couldn't have a happy ending?
🥀
That night, Ponyboy tossed and turned until Soda threw a leg over his, securing his chest to Ponyboy's clammy back. Go to sleep, kid, he whispered, words muffled into Ponyboy's shoulder blade, lips pursed into some semblance of a kiss.
Oh, hell, he thought, eyes shooting open again.
