A strong slap was given by our professor to one of our classmates. He had been asking him for the nth time, but our classmate was mentally absent, making our professor feel furious.
No one dared to speak even when mga professional na ang narito sa law school. Who are they afraid of? Sa professor namin na magaling mang-invalidate at mangutya ng mga estudyante niya? Bakit kahit may mga matataas na degree na ang mga tao rito, they are still keeping their mouth shut kahit their professor is bad-mouthing and hurting them na like they are sort of a dimwitted person?
This is a law school and not a torture school, for goodness' sake.
Without any trepidation, I stood up.
"Professor Edis, is it lawful to physically harm a student simply because they were mentally absent during your class session? Additionally, it was Mr. Pacudan's first time behaving in such a manner. Maybe he have his reasons," I said firmly.
Straight ang tingin ko sa aming professor at hindi bumibitaw ang aking mga mata sa tingin niya. Kung may kamay siyang bakal, then I have a pride stronger than any steel.
"Ivy," Ellie, who was sitting behind me, objected. "Napapakinggan mo ba ang sarili mo?"
I looked at her curiously. Hindi ko siya maintindihan. Bakit niya ako pinapatigil e this is for everyone's good?
Our professor suddenly spoke and agreed with Ellie's words. "Yeah. Do you hear yourself, Ms. Javier? Who gave you the rights to question my way of disciplining my students who are the future law holders of our country?"
I chuckled sarcastically. "I'm sorry, Prof., but I can actually hear myself. I also do understand what I am saying clearly. But one thing that I cannot understand is 'Do you have the rights to discipline your students who you are calling 'the future law holders of our country' with your kamay na bakal?'"
Napatawa naman si Prof. at unti-unting umakyat sa maliliit na hagdan patungo sa puwesto ko. I can see everyone's faces on my peripheral view. They are disappointed and worried at the same time. Some are smiling like an evil; it seems like they were mocking me with their judgmental look.
"Ms. Javier, he is only a BS Education graduate, and he's not even a Licensed Professional Teacher. What do you expect me to do? Bow down before him just because he is now a law student? Besides, he's not even participating in our class. He seems distracted! Is that how lawyers should behave?"
I remained firm and calm. I cannot afford lose to this argument.
"Prof., someone without a teaching license can still pursue a law degree," I said and sighed. "You don't have the rights to belittle someone just because alam mo ang background niya, na hindi pa siya nakakapasa. Perhaps being a licensed teacher was not for him; perhaps becoming a legal lawyer is. Stop being a hindrance to someone who dreams."
