17: Ostracized

(For National Poetry Month I am writing a stream-of-conscious poem per day. Each poem is  a spontaneous poem single edit — could get messy!  Here is Poem #17...)

membership

has privilege

embedded

bestowed

by right

by birth

tribe and clan

i have neither

nor history

or songs to sing

in soaring pride

here

away from

any touch

here

on the edge

in silence

i brood

contemplate

survive

shunned

shamed

and blamed

disavowed

disowned

do not think

that i

have lessons

to be learned

from you

do not think

that your

small gifts

of stringed

benefice

are desired

i have seen you

studied your rules

of belonging

and engagement

your civilized

codified covenant

offering nothing

no leisure to be

unbranded

unbound

free range

i would not

trade my soul

choose your

mindless herd

over the

lonely autonomy

of my thoughts

membership has

a price

i cannot pay.
