"Last day of living with parents, are you excited?" Nick's voice chimes through the group call, yet there is little or no reaction whatsoever.
Until George decides to react out of discomfort radiating from the inaccuracy of his friend's words.
"Actually, I have been living with my creepy uncle since I moved to America," he corrects, "and I don't see him as a parent. As much as he aspires to be my daddy."
They both laugh at the disturbing joke until the laughter's cut short by their other friend's - Clay's - remark.
"I used to live with my girlfriend."
Knowing what's about to come, Nick and George are tempted to end the call. But before they can do so, the sniffling echoes through the line.
Great, now they have to comfort him.
"Were you really ready to commit to someone named Georgina?" George cringes just from the mention of her name. Not only because it's almost identical to his name, but also because he thinks of her as a horrible person. And he doesn't want to share a name with a horrible person.
"Wait, did you like.. moan George's name while you were at it?" It finally hits Nick like a wave of ice-cold water.
Clay is pissed, he always is when this topic comes up. He's mad, and he's in his own bubble of emotions enough to not bother to even remind them once again that nobody ever called her Georgina. She went by Gina. And the red button that ends the call seems oh so tempting at that moment.
"Did he leave the call?" George double-checks, answering his own question when he sees that only he and Nick are on the line.
That made him quite upset. George wasn't the type to show too much emotion or even feel a lot of it to some extent. But denying the prominent guilt and sorrow he felt at that moment would be the equivalent of ignoring the elephant in the room (which is totally his ego).
"Living with him's gonna be a pain in the ass," Nick speaks once again, annoyance taking over his voice.
"We'll give him the big bed and take the other room together," remembering that there were two rooms (one of them had a king-sized bed, while the other had a bunk bed) George decides that it's better to take a step back this time for their own sanity, "don't really wanna wake up from sniffling sounds every night."
The line is silent for a while. There's a second throughout which George thinks he crossed the line, contemplating whether or not the remark was too senseless and harsh. But Nick's response comes quicker than the progression of the said thought.
"But I wanted the big bed.."
Yeah, well... it's no surprise that Clay's only friends and soon-to-be roommates are no good in terms of helping him overcome the difficulty that occurred so suddenly that it pretty much tore his life apart. If anything, they're close to being the opposite. They even laughed to tears when finding out the reason for the breakup.
After arguing over the rooms for a bit longer George finally changes the topic. More accurately - he avoids it.
"Okay, I gotta go pretend that I'm asleep, my uncle's coming home."
And just like that, he hangs up. Without further explanations. Without even saying goodbye.
It's a perfect opportunity for all of them to pack the very last bits of things they need before the drastic change in their lives.
George sprays a bit of his overly expensive cologne onto his neck (which he barely could afford) before putting it in one of the many packed bags. And the spraying sound reminds him that he forgot to pack his luxurious hairspray, which he goes to find immediately.
Nick spills apple juice all over the important papers his friends trusted him enough to fill out and sign all by himself recently. And that's the perfect reminder for him to pack all of the said important papers which have horrible stains on them now.
And lastly, Clay shoves a handful of gummy bears in his mouth and regrets it immediately as the toothache kicks in. That reminds him to pack his special toothpaste that helps with the sensitivity.
The next time they talk is hours before moving to their new place - a questionably low-priced house they rented for a year somewhere in Minnesota.
