"Mom, we are around the corner now, we will be there soon," Ben spoke to his mother on the phone.Ben and Paloma were dropped off in front of his parents house with their luggage in hand. Bens parent had a decent size house, they lived in a good neighborhood, they had a large two story house with a beautiful wrap around porch and an attached three car garage with a large yard and a pool.
They stood on the porch when Bens parents opened the door, Ben's parents looked at each other then back to Paloma. With a questioning look.
Ben's mother hugged him, whispering in his ear, "Who is this? Is this your girlfriend? Does she know English?"
Ben laughed nervously, looking at Paloma, "this is Paloma, my girlfriend."
Paloma extended her hand and spoke with her heavy accent, "Hello Mr. and Mrs. Jones, it is a pleasure to meet you, you have a lovely home."
Mrs. Jones stepped back, "come in," she said without taking Palomas hand, "son show her around, I am sure she has never been in such a luxuries home as our," she looked back to Paloma, "you must be lower class, I suppose accordingly with you nationality."
Paloma simply smiled, not wanting to put Ben in an awkward position.
"Lets eat lunch mom, is it ready?" Ben asked.
"Yes, Miss Alvarez, help me serve the dishes," she said and added with a smug smile, "I'm sure are are used to it."
Paloma gave a small sigh, looked at Ben as she followed his mom to the kitchen, Ben simply shrugged at her.
"Tell me Paloma, What does your family do? Servants? Gardeners?," without letting Paloma answer she said, "My husband works at the biggest Pharmaceutical company here, he is the head of his department, but you wouldn't know about those things.
When the table was set, they sat around ready to eat, "Paloma, please serve us," Mrs. Jones once again tried to humiliate Paloma.
"Mom," Ben said, "stop."
"What do you want me to say, Ben? She is a gold digger, isn't it obvious, look at her, you come from a good home a good family, while hers are servants and gardeners, I am sure," Bens mother stood up and crossed her arms.
Paloma was beyond upset, she had enough, she stood up and threw her napkin on the table, "Ben you say something now or we are done, how long do you intend on letting your mother insult me?"
Ben sat at the table looking down at his lap saying nothing, not once had he spoken up for her. Did he believe that as well, that she was using him? That she was nothing more than a gold digger? Paloma was beyond furious, but her father had taught her to hold her anger and think rationally.
Ben's mother continued to accuse Paloma,"How did you seduce my son? I want you out of here? Just looking at you disgust me, you will never be good enough for my son."
Ben tried to calm his mom, "mom, calm down," he turned to his father, "dad say something."
"No Ben, I can't believe that you would bring someone like this here, what if she tries to steel something? I don't want you seeing her again, you will break this off this instant," Bens mother was hysterical, "If you don't stop this nonsense now, we will cut you off Ben, we will not pay for your college while you are being taken advantage of by this foreigner."
"I couldn't agree with your mother more, she is right, that girl is a nobody she is probably just using you for you social states as well as other things," he side eyed Paloma, "get her out of here," he said to Paloma and turned to his son, "we don't need you involving yourself with her kind."
