"You always put others over yourself."
"You do the same, you know?"
Steam was emitting from the body of the Armoured Titan, his head tilted down as he kneeled. No action was taken by the Titan-shifter, leading most of you to believe that his demise had finally arrived at the hands of the Survey Corps.
However, something felt wrong to you. Something, deep within your guts felt as though something was wrong. Something bad was going to happen. And not just to anyone else, it was to you, specifically. Because of that, you couldn't let your guard down just yet.
"It's not over!" Hange shouted, seemingly feeling just like you. "Ready your equipment for the next round!"
As you stood next to Mikasa who was lending a comforting ear to Armin, your eyes caught sight of a slight shift in the Titan's movements. Taking a step forward, you held out an arm in front of the two teens, uselessly shielding them from the Armoured Titan which had brought his head upwards, letting out a loud roar, contradicting the belief that he had finally met Death.
Horrified faces were worn by the whole group that was battling the Titan shifter. Using your left hand, you covered your left ear, hoping to bring some relief to your eardrums while your right arm was still stretched out as a shield for the teens, slightly pushing them backward. The long roar the Titan-shifter let out finally ended before he fell. Simultaneously, your mind began filling up with questions.
'Why isn't he doing anything else?' You wondered, suspicions running through your head. 'What was the point of roaring like that?' Just then, your eyes widened, your mind going to one theory. 'Unless-'
"The Colossal Titan," you mumbled under your breath in realization.
"EVERYONE! SEND MORE THUNDER SPEARS! LET'S FINISH IT ONCE-"
"HANGE!" You shouted in panic. "The Colossal Titan is coming!" You said, earning the same words from Armin.
"Up there! The Colossal Titan is coming!" Armin pointed to a barrel in midair.
"Shit," Hange cursed angrily. "EVERYONE GET AWAY FROM THE ARMOURED TITAN RIGHT NOW!"
You activated your gear, zipping through the air to gain distance away from the Titan shifter as well as the one that was coming. Based on what you heard regarding the Colossal Titan, it seemed that the latter titan could burn you all to ashes if you so much so as to stand in the radius of his wrath.
'Shit, we'd all be caught in the explosion at this rate,' you worried. 'Fuck, can't this stupid gear get any faster?' You cursed, glancing over your shoulders to see your comrades still quite behind you, Hange the closest one.
You heard the boy scream Reiner's name loudly, gaining everyone's attention. You glanced over your shoulder while midair, watching as the teen boy landed by the Armoured Titan. Noticing that nothing was happening yet, you landed on a rooftop, the others following suit nearby. You stood next to a breathless Hange whose bright expression you've grown to love had disappeared only to a frowning one.
"In any case, our mission objective just came falling into our laps," they said. "You could even call this lucky."
"Target coming from ahead! It's Bertholdt!" Someone shouted.
"Our plan is as follows," Hange announced. "Squad Levi protects Eren under Armin's commands! All the others work together to take down the two targets!"
"ROGER!" A chorus of affirmation was let out.
Without a second to waste, you flew next to Moblit and Hange, only to be followed by Armin. "This is our last chance to negotiate!" he reasoned.
You exchanged a confused look with Hange, watching as Armin landed himself on a rooftop. He called out to Bertholdt, shouting for the latter boy to stop, resulting in him landing sideways against a tower. You watched, silently moving forward, as Armin and Bertholdt talked loudly over the abandoned city.
You were in hiding, trying to move forward to reach Reiner to finish him off. Mikasa emerged from behind Bertholdt, causing a fight between the two. But ultimately, Bertholdt got away and Mikasa stopped Armin from following the taller boy in fear that the Colossal Titan will appear.
Regardless, you focused ahead, your gaze going upwards to the sky only to realize that Berthold was getting higher and higher into the sky, going towards the direction all of you were going.
"HANGE! WE HAVE TO GET AWAY!" You shouted, loud enough for everyone to hear.
You were returning back, trying to get away as fast as possible, trying to stay alive. And you could have gotten there. You were aiming to get as far as that certain house where you could use it as a shield. You could have. If you just zipped through the air without looking anywhere but your target, you could have gotten there.
But you had to look back.
You had to look back only to see Moblit push Hange away only to have himself be devoured by the fire of the Colossal Titan. You had to look back only to see Moblit looking at Hange with those eyes you knew meant so much more than what a subordinate was supposed to feel for their superior.
But it was a good thing you did.
Because then you managed to save them.
You managed to fly away, snatching Hange's body in your arms.
And again, you could have survived. Both you and Hange could have survived.
But the impact of the explosion had sent a wave of force to you all, pushing Hange off your arms until they landed a distance away from you. And maybe, you could have had the same luck.
Except the houses nearby had been affected by the eruption as well. And the stones had been wrecked worse than before. The heavy materials fell, trapping you against the ground. You let out a low scream of pain, feeling the bones in your body breaking as a result of the weight on your weakened body.
Alongside the walls of the houses, the heat from the Colossal Titan did not quite escape you. The flesh on your skin burned deeply, your sensations heightened, your mind lighting in weight. You were losing consciousness, you knew that.
"Y/N!"
Hange's voice was the last thing you heard before your eyes closed, your mind taking you away to allow yourself peace.
'Shit, what was that explosion?' Levi cursed, glancing over his shoulder towards the other side of the Wall. 'Did Y/N and the others avoid it?' He wondered, his heart beating fast, overwhelming him with a bad gut feeling. 'You better be safe, Y/N. I still need you. I need to hurry and get over there-'
And Levi, more than anything, wanted to go to the other side. He wanted to find you. No- He needed to find you. He needed to know whether you were okay or not.
He needed to know whether you survived the explosion or not. He needed to know that you were safe.
Because you had to be, right?
You ᴘʀᴏᴍɪꜱᴇᴅ. You ᴘʀᴏᴍɪꜱᴇᴅ you'd survive today. And you weren't him. You're good at keeping your ᴘʀᴏᴍɪꜱᴇꜱ.
So he should be relieved. Because he knew you'd keep your word.
Yes, that's right.
He should be relieved.
Yet relief was nowhere close to the feeling residing within his entire being.
And he needed to rid himself of that by going to find you.
But fate did not allow such a thing to happen.
Fate in the form of the Beast Titan.
'Just hang on, Y/N,' he thought to himself, his focus ahead but his mind thinking of you. 'Just hang on until I get there. Stay alive until I find you.'
