June 2026
Our trip to Colorado served as a reset on my anxiety. When we got back to DC, I felt like a new person. Thanks to Emily, I felt like I could conquer the world. I returned to DC refreshed.
Hand-in-hand, Emily and I walked up to the residence at the end of our day. She had barged into the Oval and forced me to call it a day. And before we even left the West Wing, she started telling me a joke. It was long and elaborate; it took her the whole time to set this joke up. I chuckled at her; it was so cute how involved she was in this joke. She was so earnest, taking forever.
She paused on the stairs, her hand tugging me back. "Wait," she said, her eyes going wide. "I forgot the punchline." Her brow creased in concentration, trying to remember. I burst out into laughter. I couldn't contain it. My laugh echoed around the stairwell. "Hang on!!" Emily urged.
I had to lean onto the railing because I was about to fall over. I laughed so hard tears rolled down my eyes. "There's no need to laugh SO hard. I didn't even finish the joke." She sounded put out.
"Babe, I'm - I'm sorry!" I wheezed out. "It's just that you spent our whole walk up here setting this joke up, and for what?" She pushed me up the stairs and rolled her eyes at me.
"Okay. C'mon you." I continued to chuckle, bumping into her shoulder. She draped her arm around me and pulled me close. I couldn't help but look up at her with love overflowing from my eyes. My little joking Emily. I only had eyes for her; I was so in love with her.
"Ladies," Green said as we passed in front of the door. "Prentiss, could I talk to you?" Emily and I stopped in front of him, her arm dropping from around me. I waited for him to start speaking again. Both of them turned to look at me expectantly.
"Ahh!" I said, realization dawning on me. "Super-secret agent stuff." Emily rolled her eyes but squeezed my hand. "I'll start dinner, Em."
As I walked inside, I wondered what could be so important. I pushed it to the back of my mind, knowing I could hound Emily about it later. I quickly washed my hands and pulled everything I needed for dinner out of the fridge. I quickly chopped veggies and put oil and garlic in a pan and soon felt Emily's arms around my waist and a kiss to my head.
"What was that about?" I asked upon seeing her worried face.
"Nothing baby," she hedged. "That smells good...what are you making?"
"Don't distract me with compliments," I said lightheartedly. "What did Green want?"
She sighed and pulled away from me. "He said he saw another agent, Anderson, up here pulling on the door of the residence."
My eyes widened. "Could it be, you know, him?"
"No. This guy's new. He just started about two months ago. He couldn't have written the letter because he wasn't here for any of the events, and though he was here when the photo scandal broke, that picture was taken several months ago. If I remember correctly," she said moving closer, "You wore that for me for New Year's." She took me in her arms again, her lips sweeping down my neck.
I threw everything in the pan to fry. "Could he be lying?"
She sighed, "Who Green?" I nodded. "I don't know why he would, but it couldn't be Anderson..." I flipped the rice over to mix all the veggies, catching all of it back in the pan. "Woah that was fancy!" Emily exclaimed.
