I collapsed on a bed that felt so soft, I thought I was going to sink right through it. The blanket was warm and inviting, as if someone had put it in the dryer moments before I plopped down on it. The sheets were the most creamy white I’d ever seen. The pillows were so soft and fluffy that clouds couldn’t even hope to compare. I was about to fall into what would probably be the most restful sleep I could ever have when my roommate Emily decided to interrupt.
“O...M...Wowza!! This hotel is amazeballs! I can’t wait to visit the Victoria and Albert Museum! Jenika, can you believe we’re here?!” The blonde squealed in excitement. Sadly for her, Julika, her cousin and our second roommate, was not in the mood.
“What I can’t believe is that after I hauled my rear end up and down the Buckingham Palace, you’re talking about going somewhere else.” Julika sighed in annoyance as she tore off her shoes aggressively.
“Oh, don’t be such a Negative Nancy.” Emily took out some pajamas and skipped into the bathroom to change.
“Jeez, for someone who’s spent probably every Christmas of her life here, she is way too excited. Someone might mistake her for you.” Julika chuckled in my direction.
“Don’t get me wrong. This is the coolest thing to ever happen to me, but there will be time for fan-girling tomorrow. But you can’t say you aren’t excited.”
“Not really. It kinda lost it’s wonderment after my 8th birthday.”
“Oh that’s right, you grew up here didn’t you?”
“Yep. I suffered here until 9th grade when dear old dad decided to have his brain cells hold hands and move us out to the ‘promised land’.” I momentarily ignored her derogatory comments toward America and her father due to the fact that I couldn’t understand why she’d want to leave this gorgeous wonderland.
“But why?”
“Why what?”
“Why do you hate it here?”
“I hate everywhere. I just hate it here the most.”
“But it’s so beautiful. What could’ve possibly happened to make you want to leave.”
“You really want to know?”
“I really do.”
“People kept sitting in the street.” And with that Julika fell into a light slumber leaving me dumbfounded.
“That’s ridiculous. This place is so amazing and you hate it just because-'' As I heard a faint, tired chuckle, it came to my attention that Julika was messing with me and wasn’t going to tell me the real reason.
The next morning, I went downstairs and was met with the mouth-watering scent of a full English breakfast. I saw piles of fried eggs sitting next to the most buttery fried bread I’d ever seen. The smell of the juicy sausages and bacon made my stomach growl like a starving beast latching eyes on its prey. Emily, Julika, and I put our backpacks at a table. Emily and I walked up to the self-serve station, reaching halfway before we noticed Julika wasn’t with us.
“Aren’t you hungry, Jenika?” Emily frowned at Julika.
“Oh dear cousin of mine, don’t tell me you’ve forgotten.” Julika fauned offense.
“Oh right you’re vegan. I am so so sorry. How insensitive of me!” Emily was on the verge of tears for having forgotten something about her cousin as personal and important as eating preferences.
“Jeez, relax bubbles. I was only joking. I’m not upset.” Julika laughed as much as she was capable of. For some reason, Julika was referring to Emily as bubbles. I didn’t know why but it wasn’t my place to ask.
