“I’m so sorry, lightning bug. That’s awful. But don’t you fret. I promise, I’m going to help you. My name is Rose, I’m a manager at this hotel. I’m going to do whatever I can to help you....” She let her sentence run off as a way of asking my name.
“Caitlyn. My name is Caitlyn.”
“That’s a beautiful name. I promise I’m going to help you.
“Thank you so much. I can’t even explain how much this means to me.” She smiled at me.
“Ok, first things first. You need to call someone you know from your class. Do you have your phone with you?” I shook my head. I needed to find it.
“That’s ok. You can use mine.” She handed me her phone. It was light pink with roses, it was very old lady-ish. But it got the job done. I called the first person that came to mind. Because even if he can’t help, I really need to hear from him.
“Ricky?” I took a deep breath. Rose put her hand on my shoulder to remind me that as much as I felt like it, I wasn’t alone.
“...Caity-Cat?”
“Yeah it’s me.”
“Oh my gosh, it’s so great to hear from you. I couldn’t find you on the plane, where are you?” I winced with every word.
“I...I’m still at the hotel.” A stray tear fell down my face. I kept listening for his response. I need him to be strong for me. “Ricky?...Ricky!”
“Yeah, sorry. I’m just taking it all in.”
“Can you guys come back for me?” I asked hopefully even though deep inside of me, I already knew the answer.
“Cait...we’re already in America.” My heart shattered. I knew it was bad. I knew it was horrible. But no part of me was prepared for it to be this bad.
“Oh.” What more could I say? “Bu-But it’s ok, I can just buy a ticket for another flight.” I tried to stay hopeful.
“Cait, there aren’t any more flights.”
“What do you mean, there has to be more.”
“The whole country’s on lockdown. That’s why we had to leave.” I could hear Ricky’s voice shaking.
“So I’m just stuck here?” I was feeling overwhelmed. All I wanted was to wake up in my hotel room and for all of this to have been a dream. Of course that would mean that my moment with Ricky was a dream. No, as bad as this was, I wouldn’t give that moment up.
“Hey, we’re going to figure this out ok? Hey look, I have to go but I promise, I’m going to get you home Caity-Cat.” Ricky sympathized. I handed Rose her phone back in shock. That reminds me of the third thing about me and Ricky. He would never lie to me...intentionally. He’s made many promises that he couldn’t keep. It comes out of the goodness of his heart. He just wants to help people, it’s just sometimes he bites off more than he can chew. So when he was sitting here telling me that he was going to rescue me from across the ocean, I regret to say that I didn’t believe him for a second.
“Hey, honeypie, why don’t you get some rest. You have had a long day. I promise that when you wake up, we’ll have this all figured out. James, can you help her to her room? Anything she needs, make sure she gets it.” Rose waved over one of her employees and he took her place on the couch next to me, except he didn’t stand as close. He and I made eye contact and my heart (or what was left of it anyway) sank into my stomach.
“Coffee guy? You work here?” I was fuming just by seeing him again.
“Ah yes, the nationalist.” He smirked.
“I know you get your chokes and giggles from annoying me but if we could raincheck for when my life isn’t falling apart, that’d be great.” I smiled passive aggressively. He smiled, not the same signature smirk I was pleasantly greeted with before, an actual genuine smile.
“Look, I overheard what happened. I...can’t imagine what you’re going through but if I can help I will.” He looked me in the eyes and all I did was get lost in them. I studied every aspect of his emeralds. Every intricate little detail that made them his and only his. I could get lost in his eyes forever.
“Really? You’d do that for me?” I breathed a little. He smiled another one of those heart-warming smiles.
“Don’t get the wrong idea, I’m only doing this because the old lady told me to.” He stood up, ruining the moment. I was baffled by the sudden change in mood.
“O-oh.” This guy is a special type of jerk.
“Come on princess, your castle awaits.” He held out his hand for me to take. I was confused by his lack of concern but nonetheless took it as wisdom and followed him. If I was going to get through this, I’d have to stay calm. Which is hard to do when you feel like your life is going out of control.
