Chapter 29

*Netero sighs and rubs his temples.*

Netero

"The Association sent us to exterminate the ants under the presumption there was an imminent threat to humanity..."

*Netero glances between Mara and Meruem.*

"Obviously... that's not the case anymore."

Mara

"Then what exactly do you plan to do? I don't intend to let any form of harm befall anyone here, human or ant."

Netero

"I'll have to make a couple phone calls... but first, I wanted to talk to you."

*Netero turns to Meruem, his intense gaze sending a chill down his spine.*

"As far as I know, your mother never gave you your name. You up and left before she had the chance to utter it."

*Meruem crosses his arms, subconsciously assuming a defensive position.*

Meruem

"What of it?"

Netero

"Oh-ho so defensive! I was merely inquiring if you'd like to know your name."

*Mara's eyes light up at the prospect and she eagerly looks between her father and Meruem.

Meruem nods to Netero, prompting him to continue.*

"The name your mother left you is... Meruem."

Mara

"The light that illuminates all. That's what your name means..."

*Mara starts to laugh and turns to Meruem.*

"Well hello, Meruem~"

*Netero laughs as well, waving a curt goodbye to the two.*

Netero

"Please excuse me, it's about time I phone the Association. We'll have to properly sit down and sort everything out soon."

*Mara waves goodbye to her father, hesitant to be separated again so soon. She watches as he makes his way to the edge of the crowd, dialing his secretary Bean as he scans the scene in front of him.

In a bid to redirect her attention, Meruem cups Mara's face, looking deep into her eyes.*

Meruem

"Mara... I'm so sorry. I couldn't protect you..."

*Meruem averts his gaze, his heart aching at the thought of Mara hating him.*

Mara

"You'll come to learn not everything is in your control. I don't fault you one bit, please don't feel guilty."

Meruem

"I don't know what I would've done if you had died... I'm relieved. Relieved you're here in front of me, that I can still hold you like this. I promise I'll never let harm come your way again."

*Mara leans into Meruem's touch and laughs.*

Mara

"That's quite a tall task, you should know I'm quite the klutz~"

*Meruem chuckles, pulling Mara into his chest and close to him, careful not to put pressure on her wound.*

"As much as I'd like to stay like this for an eternity, there's much to sort out. Shall we?"
