( NUMBER 12 GRIMMAULD PLACE 1995 )༊*·˚ CASSANDRA BLACK'S DISDAIN for her own name, her family name, was embodied in the tapestry that hung idly against the walls of a room at 12 Grimmauld's place. The name Cassandra traces back to Greek mythology —as she had read in the muggle books her aunt Vanessa had given her when she was eleven— and means "the one who shines and excels over men". She would never admit it out loud, she did feel a smidgeon of gratitude for her parents for giving her that name — but Black, or even Baudelaire, were two names that had come to tarnish her entire being, a violent reminder of whose blood ran in her very skin. And the tapestry was certainly not the only reminder of that. Take this for instance: Kreacher (the house-elf) had seemed to appreciate Cassie more than he did Sirius, explaining that Master Regulus would've been upset if he hadn't obeyed every single order that rolled off Cassie's tongue.
Hence, she stood afore the tapestry, lazily holding a cigarette between her fingers letting the end fall ever so slightly every time she drew it away from her mouth, allowing the smoke to drift in the air. No one would notice the stench, Cassie thinks, the place is already filthy enough.
Hydra had told Cassie everything that had happened the night before during dinner — and she hadn't left out the detail, that she was in fact the weapon Sirius had talked about. Cassie could have asked her why she felt that way as none of them had said it explicitly, but she knew exactly what Hydra meant. It was clear that no one needed to say such things to Hydra, as evidenced by the way they gazed at or spoke to her, with an unnecessarily tender lilt in their voices. Cassie knew the feeling, and while Sirius had told her plainly that she looked and reminded him too much of his own brother, she had never forgotten how Vanessa had almost called Cassie by her mother's name during a fight they had when Cassie was thirteen.
"You're related to the Malfoys?" Hydra frowns at the tapestry.
The tapestry appeared to be rather old; it was worn and gnawed in places, but the golden thread with which it was woven still glistened brightly enough to reveal a huge family tree extending back to the Middle Ages. At the very top of the tapestry, large inscriptions read:
THE NOBLE AND MOST ANCIENT HOUSE OF BLACK
"toujours pur""The pure-blood families are all technically related," Cassie explains, "I'm sure we're somehow related."
"I know that," says Hydra with a small nod, "I just never knew Draco was your cousin."
Cassie snorts, "By blood, yes. But we've barely interacted ever since I told him how ridiculously high-pitched his voice was during our first year."
