Reizan grabbed his keffiyeh and tightened his combat jacket, he wrapped the keffiyeh around his hair and then around his lower face, only revealing his startling eyes. He sighed, hating the sharp rules his boss had gave him.
He thought about his house, his niece, his new wife who he was going to help. He didn't hate his situation, people in Jordan suffered much worse than him, he was grateful to even be given a bed to stay in. He noticed a soft vibrating in his pocket and picked his phone up. "We have detected some activity around the house Reizan" One of the bodyguards around his house explained. "A masked figure who was looking into the garden windows, we didn't catch him however" He said disappointedly.
"You did your best Khaled, that is the priority. Make sure when he comes put those wires out".
The bodyguard knew exactly what Reizan was talking about.
"Have a good day Reizan"
That was all until the call ended and Reizan sat on the end of his bed, thinking of what to do, he seemed like such a big creature on the outside but on the inside he was a tiny kangaroo, wanting to be in his mothers pouch, wanting her support again. His appearance didn't match his emotions, he was a large man, dark features except his blue eyes. His facial hair tidily trimmed and he kept his clothes ironed. Never creased. But this job, there wasn't ever a minute where he would look presentable. His job was the opposite, commotion and combat.
"Reizan, boss wants to see you" A voice appeared once he had just left his little accommodation. Reizan walked to his office, as he was walking everytime to his office, he felt bullets coming at him, he felt as if betraying his country, but it wouldn't be too long before he would get payback, all this time he had kept his mouth shut and went with it but now he would finally get revenge. He wanted to see him suffer.
He opened the door and shut it slowly behind him, maintaining a soft tone.
"Reizan, listen" His boss stated with a sly grin. "I want you to lead a small group.
"To do what?" Reizan knew exactly what..
Reizan took some guns and slid them into his pocket, he didn't bother taking any bullets. He followed the rest of the men to the large trucks. The truck started and they were off towards one of the main cities. To ordinary people they looked like policemen but these people were far from that. Reizan was far from that. He was just caught in the middle of no man's land. He was stuck between heaven and hell.
The truck stopped and the men quickly got out. The city looked deserted, no cars were around, no voices, just sand rolling around the abandoned houses. "Yallah, everyone go check the houses" He shouted to all the men waiting for his command. A minute later, Reizan also went to look around but he had no intentions as they did. He turned into a little alleyway and spotted a piece of fabric dancing in the wind. Although it was summer and night, he could make out the white fabric singing in the wind. He slowly tiptoed to the corner, seeing a tiny girl wearing a hijab with her eyes closed, her hand on her mouth sealed shut. She slowly opened her eyes and spotted Reizan, she saw the gun tucked in his pocket and bent down quickly, praying to him, begging him to not kill her.
"Wallah I will not do anything sister" Reizan whispered. He put his hand on his heart, reassuring her.
"I have an escape plan, follow me".
The girl hesitated for a second but noticed she had no other option, no other person to turn to. The girl went behind Reizan as he began to walk away from the city. Reizan knew this city like the back of his hand.
"Where are you taking this girl boss? Reizan quickly shoved the girl in front of him and made her walk.
"To the truck, I will deal with her" The man lowered his gun and nodded. Reizan waited until the man was out of sight and nodded at the girl, Reizan began to slowly run towards the few cars parked on the pavement. He quickly tapped the glass and two guys appeared. He opened the door for the girl and waved goodbye at her. He tapped the glass and the car was gone. He quickly ran back to the abandoned city and got his gun out, trying to find the large group of men again.
"Boss what did you do with the girl?" The man from earlier appeared, wiping his forehead with sweat. Reizan shook his head and looked down to his gun dripping with blood, the man also dropped down his eyes to the gun and nodded. He hit Reizans back as a sign of appreciation and ran off.
"There is no one else here" The soldier said before walking off in defeat.
Reizan began to run back to the way the trucks were parked as a group of men ran in front of him into the truck. He jumped into the truck and put his gun back into his pocket, the blood staining his combat jacket.
Suddenly, he looked up to see the boss of it all sitting in front of him, he nodded. "Nice to see you finally in action my wonderful assistant. Who was it you killed?" His boss swirled his words with satisfaction.
"A girl" The man from before added in. "There was no other people sir, we thought there would be more people since we last got this city a year ago but nothing" The man added and looked out to the window."its as if someone told them to all evacuate. Sir I've been inspecting these cities and there were more than 10 families here 3 months ago". Reizan couldn't smile, but in his head he was proud of himself and his team.
"We will find out who is telling them" stated the boss of it all.
The boss looked over at Reizan with startling blue eyes the same as his; "I hope you left your imprint on her" The boss grinned and Reizan became uncomfortable. Not in a million worlds would be think of commuting such a horrible thing. Reizan couldn't seem suspicious. He nodded and quickly turned back to the window.
"I want to see this country suffer just as it has been for me" The boss spoke and everyone agreed. "When we capture every man's woman they will be begging us" The boss laughed with evil. Reizan would never let that happen. It had already happened, but this time he wouldn't allow this.
The rest of the car ride back to their bases, Reizan watched as Jordan was falling apart, the women who were out were harassed in their paths, men were beaten, children ran away from men with guns. Reizan kept his fists tight, his jaw tight, as the car passed the scene.
It had taken me a long time to get to the place I was, if I once made a wrong move, that would be it. I would lose everything I had been dying to do.
Boss looked at the other men and then to me. "Reizan guard the base today, you are my most special man" he glared at all the other men in the truck.
As soon as I heard those words I gave a smirk and went back to looking out of the window.
Finally arriving at the camp, the boss stepped out first then we did. The camp was lively full of men testing out guns and nuclear weapons. I followed boss into his massive tent. Upon arriving at the tent, an old lady holding a tray was held hostage, trapped in her own land.
"You will serve for us, forget about your family, you will stay many years with us." Boss shouted to the poor woman. My fists tightened and wallah if he put one hand to her I would kill him.
"Two sugars next time and we will have no problems" he smiled and the lady walked out of the tent, giving me a dirty look.
"Filthy beggars, they are lucky we are giving them a job".
I sat down on a small chair on the side. "You can start guarding. Why have you even come inside. aikhruj." Get out.
I nodded in apology and went to the outside of the tent standing at the side. Another man came to the other side and nodded at me.
As the night fell, the moon began to reflect onto us. I slowly eyed the other man, his eyes winning the battle, he slowly layed his head on the tent material and shut his eyes.
I made my move, slowly tiptoeing around the camp, everyone was asleep or either out, I made big steps to move towards the tent with the innocent woman inside. I saw her sleeping and woke her up. She instantly moved to the side of the tent with her hands covering her face.
"I am not here to hurt you, I want to help you." I said, trying to show her I wouldn't hurt her.
"Where will you take me then, I have gone through this many times, I am broken" She spat through hatred.
Reizans eyebrows had shot up. He couldn't begin to think the amount of pain she had had to endure.
"I'll help" Is all Reizan said. The woman got up and sighed and followed Reizan to the exit of the camp.
"I have had poor treatment all my life, if you kill me I would love it, I can't do it myself it's a sin. I would even thank you". The woman's eyes started to fill with tears. Reizan reached the end of the road and spotted a black car. The car window rolled down. "Don't worry auntie we will take you from this horrible place" Reizan's friend Ozam was his most trusted man. The woman got in and the car drove off.
Reizan began to hurry back to the camp wondering if they noticed he had gone.
"Where did you go?" Reizan turned to the side where the man who he was guarding with was standing.
"Toilet" Reizan simply said before waking back to the boss' tent.
"Really because I never knew it would take that long" the man raised an eyebrow and Reizan scoffed.
The man returned to his spot and kept quiet, after all it was Reizan who he was speaking to. He even regretted saying those words, trying to act big since boss wasn't around.
As morning came, Reizan wished he could see his niece but he knew that she was in good hands. He wanted to be there to see her grow, he wanted to always be next to her, she reminded him of his brother.
Bringing him out of his thoughts, boss came out of the tent and nodded at them both to go. Reizan wanted to finally leave until he heard Boss' voice again.
"Not you" Reizan turned around and followed him.
"Today I need you to go around the area and evacuate everyone there, I don't care how you do it. Everyone needs to be gone"
Reizan nodded and to grabbed some guns out of the crate and some ammo. He tucked it into his waistband and walked in the opposite direction towards the dirt road. He kept on walking until he came across to his car. He was trusted to go and kill on his own. He couldn't lose this chance.
