Sigyn put the book down, unblinking and silent. Nanna was looking at her, worried. Idunn had already prepared apple tea. They were prepared. Sigyn was not, obviously.
"Death", she finally said.
"What?", Nanna asked, her face whitening at the sound of Sigyn's words.
"Yeah. Death. If I die, it will all stop, right? Whether I go to Valhalla or Hel, I don't care. It could not be worse than this.", Sigyn stated, still petrified by what she had just read.
When The Dark Prince's Love had been released, Sigyn had been rather happy. If someone had written a sequel to her infamous little fantasy, then, it was a good thing! People would talk about it, rather than the first volume. Readers always craved for something fresh, forgetting their former obsession, moving on to newer, better things. The whole thing would have been great, had the sequel's content not been so damning for her reputation.
The second part of The Dark Prince's Tale was very different from its first. Here, there was no thrilling adventures, no dangerous missions. No. It was Prince Loki, living his life in Asgard, with a new character by his side. A new love interest who shared his bed... when they used a bed.
Sweet Norns! They were making it everywhere! They were going at it, worse than rabbits! There were also nice romantic scenes, but they all led to more passionate embraces. Whoever the new writer was, they were horny idiots, for sure!
But it all would have been good fun, if the description of this new female character had not been her exact portrait. Small, chubby, red-hair, blue eyes, half Vanir, half Dwarf, princess... It was difficult not to recognize her.
She had not read the book at first. She had not cared for it, too worried about the first one, still a success, still anonymous, knowing the AllFather had probably set a prize over her head for daring to write such things about the Royal family.
But then, people started looking at her in the streets of Vanaheim, in her Mother's Hall. It was strange, truly. No one had ever noticed her before. She was there, same as her sisters, but they never saw her or paid attention to her. Sigyn preferred it that way, as she did not feel at ease under the court's scrutiny. Her mother's was enough, she did not need more people criticizing her, calling her 'fat', and 'boring', and 'plain', or 'unworthy of the Freyadottir name'.
She could now hear whispers in the hallways as she passed through. Servants giggling, ladies looking at her with even more despise than before, men fixing on her a gaze of mixed lust and disgust. And then words. Awful words... "Slut", "whore", "Loki's bedwarmer", "Vanir plump tart", "stupid dwarf mule", and so on. They had questions too: "Why her?", "What does he find in that stout uninteresting doormat?", "Maybe he's after her father's gold?", "Maybe seducing her is part of a mission? That poor Prince! Having to bed such a fat ugly girl!"...
At first, Sigyn did not understand what was going on. Then, she saw Nanna, with a shocked, worried look on her face, and that book in her hands.
"Sister, I had no idea Prince Loki and you were so intimate!", her younger sibling told her, blushing, "Are the nuptials soon? You could have told me, you know! I wouldn't have said a word!"
But Sigyn and Loki had never met. No, they were not lovers, they were not even acquainted! Not that she was aware...
Going back to the privacy of her chambers, hiding away from some insistent gazes and mocking remarks, Sigyn sat down on her bed and started reading the book in question.
Oh Norns!
Every page was pure fire under her fingers, burning some of the scenes in her mind. Had the female character not looked some much like her, she would have approved of it, though with a blush on her cheeks, and avoiding the eyes of whoever would have asked her opinion on the subject.
