In our lives, it is guaranteed that each of us - at some point in time - will experience hardship; in the form of bereavement, trauma, or some other negative occurrence. Thus, with the guarantee that hardship will be faced - potentially recurringly - it is imperative that we establish a robust defence mechanism against hardship, so that futuristically we are potentially more finely equipped to manage hardship, and likewise so that we are capable of aiding others who have endured the same - or a similar - hardship (which in turn produces positive emotions).
The aforementioned can be achieved exclusively by deriving from each negative occurrence - or hardship - some semblance of a positive. As an example, experiencing bereavement will impose upon you an appreciation of time, while trauma will allow you to aid others.
