Move notations are made in order to convey a sequence of moves through writing. In order to show a certain turn or a sequence of turns around the cube through writing, there are some agreed key letters that specify exactly what move should be made. There are 6 different letters for turning the Rubik's cube, each for the 6 faces of the Rubik's cube to be turned:
F (front): the side of the cube facing the solver.
B (back): the back face of the cube.
R (right): the right face of the cube.
L (left): the left face of the cube.
U (up): the upper face of the cube.
D (down): the face opposite to the upper face. The F,R,L and U are the most commonly used abbreviations when solving the cube.
A plain letter means turning a single turn, 90°clockwise.
Any letter followed by an apostrophe mark (') known as "prime" means turning the corresponding face a single turn, 90° counter-clockwise.
Letter followed by "2" means turning the corresponding face twice (180°).
A small letter means turning the face along with its corresponding middle layer, making it a double layer turn. The reason for doing such moves is that it can reduce the need of cube rotations.
A sequence of moves is called an algorithm.
There is a notation exercise to familiarize oneself with the cube and the move is:
R U R' U'
In plain English, this means that the right side should move up, then the upper side should move towards the left side, then the right side should move down and lastly, the upper side should move towards the right side. (This move would be called the sexy move in this tutorial. When starting this move with a particular side facing you, it must not be turned until it is completed)
