Part 40

Ranbir's POV:
It was some police officers and our friend who helped us arrest that bastard.
We came in and the senior inspector started to talk.

Senior Inspector:'Mr.Kohli, we have some questions for you, if you can please sit.'
I nodded and sat along with Aryan.
Prachi was beside me as everyone looked tense.

What must have happened?
Senior inspector: 'We want to know where you were after the arrest of Mr. Malhotra?'
Aryan and I exchanged looks.

So, this was about the acid, obviously they had to take him to the hospital.
Aryan: 'We went for a drive. Ranbir was very frustrated and angry with him so I took him outside to calm him down.'

Inspector: 'Any other witnesses of that?'
Chief: 'Why, Inspector? Is there something wrong?'
Inspector: 'When Mr. Malhotra was in out custody, or from before, a mishap happened to him. Acid fell on him.'
I noticed how everyone was shocked and worried.

Inspector: 'And the most surprising part is, it fell directly on his private parts, which clearly points to the fact that it was done deliberately. And who will do that?
I guess you totally understand why I would doubt Mr. Ranbir Kohli and Mr. Aryan Khanna.'

Dad: 'He is a culprit, he did so many bad things to our daughter and you are wasting time investigating this instead of punishing him.'
Inspector: 'He may be a culprit but the person who did this as well is a culprit. You cannot take laws in your hands.'

I knew what I was doing at that time..... I will never regret it even if I have to go to jail. Aryan and I already discussed this. If we are caught, we are assuming our responsibility.

Inspector: 'Mr. Ranbir Kohli and Mr. Aryan Khanna are our prime suspects, we could have dragged them to the police station, but we are here talking politely with them. So, now would you tell me?'

I was about to say something, actually admit it but Prachi beat me to it.
Prachi: 'I did it....'
I turned to her shocked, and everyone had the same expression as mine.

The inspector looked at her along with our friend.
Inspector, confused: 'Would you repeat that?'
I looked at her again and she yet again repeated the same words.

This made me hold her hands: 'Prachi, don't....'
What is she doing?
She knew nothing about this.... She is taking the blame for me..... But this could get her in trouble.

Inspector: 'And why and when did you do this?'
Prachi, without any fear: 'He was trying to rape me a third time, I couldn't think of anything and the acid bottle was there. I didn't mean to but I threw it on him to stop him.'

'Prachi.....'
She nodded no to me. She was saving Aryan and me.
No, no.... She can go to jail because of that.

I turned to the inspector: 'She didn't do anything, we did it.'
Aryan supported me on this as he must have thought the same thing: 'Yes we did it. She had nothing to do with that.'

All family members looked at us confused and even the inspector.
Prachi: 'Ranbir and Aryan are protecting me so that I don't suffer more. They think you will take me to jail, that's why.'

'Prachi, please don't do that...'
She whispered back to me: 'I am not letting you two go to jail, because of that monster.'

Inspector: 'That's it..... I think it's pretty clear now. Miss Prachi Mehra admitted to what she did...'
'No, she didn't do anything. We did.'
I tried telling them but he wasn't listening. He turned a deaf ear to what Aryan and I were trying to say.

Inspector: 'And as it was in her defense, no actions would be taken against her. Even the officer said the same thing in his report that it was in self-defence.'

Thank God.... they are not doing anything against her. And our friend also said the same thing, because he knew that they wouldn't arrest her since it was self-defense.

Inspector: 'There is another thing that I want to tell you about that Mr. Malhotra wants a court trial.....'

That bastard wants to go to court.... I cannot let Prachi go through all of this, she started recovering and now she will have to go back to those memories and see him yet again.
'Is it necessary for Prachi to be present there?'

They all looked at me and figured out why I didn't want her there. No-one wants her there, reliving those memories again and again.

Inspector: 'That won't be necessary... Neither Prachi nor you guys have to be there. We have all the proof against him, he is not escaping.'
Chief and Dad thanked the officers before they left when the inspector called me.

Inspector: 'I know you did it with the acid thing, but I am letting you off. If I wasn't a police officer, I would have applauded you in front of everyone.
Take care of your girlfriend.'

I smiled at him: 'Thank you, Sir.'
He nodded and then left from there.

I turned back to the family members when I saw Prachi going upstairs to her room.
I sighed.... What will I tell her?
She would be so angry at me.

Pragya Aunty came to me.
Pragya Aunty: 'I know I told you to give him the worst punishment but not to an extent that you go to jail....'
'Sorry Aunty, but he deserved that only.'
Pragya Aunty: 'Go and handle your angry girlfriend.'
I nodded and went upstairs to her room.

Prachi's POV:
I can't believe Ranbir and Aryan did that.... They could have gone to jail because of that.
What would we have done then?

I was about to close the door when Ranbir appeared in front of me.
Ranbir, pleadingly: 'Hear me out for a second....'
I left the door and went to my bed.

Ranbir approached me slowly and held my arms. He turned to me and started to explain to me.

Ranbir:"i know what you are thinking but he deserved it, Prachi. For every pain that he gave you."

"I know... i know he deserved it... and worst even. You would have thrown the acid on his entire body... fine.
I wished i could do it. But in the end you and I, it's the same thing."

Ranbir, confused:"then you are not angry at me for the acid thing?"
I nodded no.

I wished I had the courage to do it.
Ranbir:"then, why are you angry?"

"What would I have done if you had gone to jail? How would I live without you?"
I turned extremely emotional when it was about him. I guessed he also noticed it and engulfed me in a hug.

Ranbir, comfortingly:"Prachi, i am not leaving you, okay?
I will alway be with you... always."

I don't why I was crying but the fact of him going away from me was unbearable and hurt more than I wanted to admit it.
Breaking the hug, he cupped my face in his big hands:"i will never leave you... never..."

"Promise?"
I was acting like a baby... a crybaby but what could I do? I couldn't help it...
I never want to be away from him, ever again. He became a part of me and separating that part seemed impossible.

Ranbir, chuckling:"i promise you. We will always stay together."
I hugged him tightly.

He stroked my hair to calm me down and we stayed in each other's arms for a long time.
