Paige P.O.V.

My parents aren't speaking to each other so this breakfast has become very awkward. Their not good with talking through their problems so this happens quite often.

They refuse to talk to a therapist too. They appall paying strangers to talk about their private problems. Problems they claim they don't even have.

All I can hear is the sound of forks hitting plates. It makes me cringe. When the fork scrapes, my shoulders physically jump.

The more time I spend with this family, the more I want to be nothing like them. The tension from this table alone was enough to stop a bullet.

In our house you are not excused until both parents have finished eating. Neither of my parents have finished, so I have to remain at the table. This wasn't a rule I planned on having in the future.

When my parents do finally finish, I am excused. Tomorrow, is officially my birthday but we're celebrating the day after. Which meant today I had to go shopping.

We're just doing a traditional party so it would just be family and the girls. Which, while I was looking forward to it, I didn't want my entire family here. They fight like cats and dogs and it's to much drama.

I'm walking along the beach when I see Taylor. She looks up at me and starts running. Tackling me to the ground.

I let out a scream and so does she. This was true friendship. We didn't plan on seeing each other, and yet we were just as excited if we had planned it.

We get some stares but there's not many people on the beach. We decide to get some lunch and hangout for the rest of the day.

She was missing her sister and I was avoiding my family. So, why not suffer less with your best friend. Plus, food was pretty good too.

The beach restaurant was practically empty so we sat down quickly. Which, was always a plus because I had a hatred for waiting. People always say that I'm short, well they should see my patience.

"You know I read that mermaids have to eat seafood in order to survive," Taylor says.

"Yeah, me too. Just not yet, I'm still not ready," I had known this for a little while but wasn't ready to eat any yet.

"Yeah, me either. So you ready for your birthday?"

"Honestly, I'm not ready to see any of my family,"

"Who's all coming?"

"Aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents,"

"Geez, how many people is that,"

"A lot, and most of them have kids,"

"Goodness,"

Waking up, I feel no different. I hated when people asked if you feel older. Obviously not, it's just a day that legally you turn a year older on. Unless your Benjamin Button.

My mom comes in shortly after I wake up with breakfast. On your birthday, you got to eat breakfast in bed. Well, I did because I wasn't messy.

I picked up a waffle and took a bite. I keep thinking about how one of my best friends isn't going to be here for my party. Madelyn was still on vacation until tomorrow.

I wish I was on vacation. I'm going to need one after this. That will be my wish, being on vacation with my girls.

This is when something completely amazing happens. All of a sudden, I'm landing on my butt on hardwood floor. I look up to a scream.
