THE DROP OF RED VIOLENT roses descended onto Ruby's lap: the flowers bringing no disruption to the girl. Her crystal icy blue eyes flashed to glimpse at her sister as Audrey Coyne's face plastered an annoyed statue. An exasperated sigh escaped the oldest Coyne as this had been the second delivery of arrangements today — the twelfth in the entire week.
Ruby glazed at the untouched miniature card tucked in between the blossoms. Practically hidden. Her fingers fumbled reading the engraving — "Please, babe, call me. I'm sorry. I love you, always, Rafe."
The simple message remained shorter than the rest: this morning's card had her favorite poem scribbled upon it, yesterday's being a paragraph on sorrow and regret, and the day before revolving around how greatly Rafe treasures her —all notes contained the identical common effortless phrase, I'm sorry.
A thin line formed on her lips as she tore the paper in bewilderment. The pieces landed against her crossed legs, diverting into dust. Ruby understood she shouldn't absolve Rafe from accountability for his actions: he had hurt her severely. Still— the brunette couldn't control the prompt thought of forgiveness as it flashed through her mind.
"Are you ever going to tell me what he did this time?" Audrey asked in suspicion, breaking the girl's trance. Her brows knit together as she smoothly planted on the couch beside her sister. Ruby usually kept her at arm's length on anything revolving around her relationship and its concealed issues.
Ruby wished she held the strength to admit how he scared her, how she saw emptiness behind his watch, and how she spent an entire hour cleaning up his mess. The young girl had arrived at Audrey's birthday party tardy: hiding behind lies. "For the last time, nothing happened. We thought it would be better if we took some time apart." — the simple fib tumbled effortlessly from her.
Audrey shook her head, frustrated: she knew there was far more to the story. But Ruby would admit to none of it. "Well, does he know that?"
He didn't, but he would.
Ruby forcefully seized her phone, her thumb hesitating for longer than a second as she contemplated what to say. She didn't want to harm him or his feelings, but she strained to remember that he didn't think twice while he brought tears to her vision. She wasn't the one that needed to feel rotten: as the waiting sound on the line ran, she anxiously fumbled with the loose string on her blanket.
He picked up after the second ring. Unknowingly to the brunette, the Cameron boy jumped from his comfort in bed, ruffling a hand through his rugged hair. A smile arose. "Babe, I'm so glad you called." Rafe's voice chimed as he was met with silence. Instantly — he comprehended she wasn't calling to rekindle: as he believed.
"Ruby?" She let out her breath, unaware she was harboring it, hearing his soft tone. She ignored his declarations, leading straight to her point before he could fumble with her head. "Stop sending gifts to my house. We're no longer together, Rafe."
"Rub—" He uttered, immediately getting cut abruptly, the girl not permitting him to ramble over his deepest regrets.
"Lose my number. I don't want to hear from you again," Ruby hastily terminated the call, not desiring to dwell on the line any longer: she knew if she had heard him out, Rafe's pleas would lead to her agreeing to see him in person, like every time before.
Ruby hoped Rafe would take the hit, leaving her be — but she was foolish to believe he would stay away.

author's note.hellooooo, it's true, i'm back from the dead! i've seen everyone's comments: and here it is <3 an update. i'm currently posting a new chapter for each of my stories. this being the first update in like years. again i'm sorry about that. honestly i feel like my writing is super rusty and terrible but here you guys go. i promise the next update will be way better. thanks for sticking with my story luvbugs!
