I hurriedly put my bags from the gas station into my backpack and ran out into the rain. It was a new town for me, but I had already memorized the basic layout, so I was quickly making my way home. I had stopped at a red light when I heard a whimper. I immediately turned in the direction of the sound and noticed a horribly torn up and soaking wet cardboard box in the dark alley on my left.
Once again I heard a weak whimper and I decided to approach the box. I looked inside and found a little puppy just laying there. It was in horrible condition. I couldn't just leave it there... Okay, I'll take him to the vet. Yep. I gently picked it up and held it like a baby, not knowing a better way to hold it. I slid my backpack off my shoulder and took out my phone, before realizing I couldn't use it in the rain.
Okay... so maybe my new apartment first. Yep. I carefully carried the puppy back to my apartment. When we got inside, Liho was laying on the couch, acting like she owned the place. I made way to her bed, I swear she was glaring at me, and placed the puppy down on the bed. I then went and grabbed a towel to dry it off. Liho was still trying to make holes inside my head with her glaring.
"Don't look at me like that. I'm helping him, doesn't mean I'm keeping him."
"Meow."
"Yes, I know I said the same thing about you, but this is different-"
"Meow."
"Relax, as soon as I find a vet, I'm taking him there."
"Meow."
"I promise you-" But she was no longer paying attention. She walked over, jumped onto a chair by the counter and layed down there watching us. I could have sworn she looked defeated. My thoughts were interrupted when the puppy whimpered again. His whimpers were still present, but they were further apart now. Was that worrying or relieving? I grabbed Liho's carrier. Liho was once again glaring at me as I was putting the little pup into it. "Relax." I told her, gently wrapping the puppy in its blanket inside the carrier. Once I was done, I turned on my computer and searched for a vet. I finally found one that looked good. 4.5 star rating, and only a few miles from where I lived. The site said it was still open, but closing soon, so I immediately got ready. As I was walking to get the carrier, I noticed Liho in the cage with the puppy, seemingly comforting it. Wow, big change of heart, huh? I smiled approvingly at Liho. She turned her back to me and continued comforting the puppy.
I put my hoodie back on, picked up the cage and walked out the door. I hurriedly walked the 2 miles to the vet. It was closed, but the lights were still on. Damnit- Okay, someone was still here- I knocked on the door. I heard someone moving around inside.
"Look, I know you're closed, but I need help- please-" I yelled. Someone finallycame out and opened the door. I let out a sigh of relief, almost hugging theguy.
"Can I help you?"
"Yeah, I found this puppy in the rain, in that classic 'free puppy' box and allthat shit, but it doesn't look to be in the best condition-"
"Oh- Fuck- Okay- Come on in-" He invited me in, stepping back and pointingto the back room. "That's the examination room, take him there-" I placed the carrier on the table and opened the door. Liho gracefully walked out, jumped on a counter nearby and sat down watching us. The guy looked confused, but quickly put on his professional face, took out the puppy and laid him on the table.
"Sorry- My cat climbed in while I was searching for a vet-"
"It's okay." He told me, before starting to examine the puppy. I walked up to Liho before she could do something she wasn't supposed to and held her, petting her to keep her calm. It took awhile, but after doing a thorough examination, the vet came to a diagnosis.
"He's malnourished, has hypothermia from the cold and the rain, seems to have a cold too, has fleas all over him, not to mention he doesn't have the proper shots... He's not in the best condition." The vet explained.
"But he'll be okay, right? With help?"
"Well, I don't know that yet- With time, maybe? Are you adopting him or...? Because I should know whether I have to give him a shelter or not-" The vet asked me, obviously wanting to get the awkward question out of the way while getting the puppy ready for its shots.
"I- uh- Sure-" I said. Liho glared at me while also giving me the "I told you so" look. But she also looked happy. She's a weird cat.
"Okay. Great. Um- Okay-" He said.
|| 5 DAYS LATER ||
Liho and I came back to the with a new carrier on my other hand, walking into the empty vet as we'd agreed to meet after hours again. Sure, Puppy still hasa pretty long road to recovery ahead, but as long as he was okay, I was okay with it.
"How does another appointment in a week sound? Just as a check up?" Alex asked me with a smile. Alex, the vet, had been amazing through all of this. Most of the extra appointments he scheduled, he scheduled after hours just to make sure he got Puppy in. He's an amazing vet and definitely deserves the 4.5 stars he had on Google.
"Yeah, that sounds great-" I agreed. Puppy was running around Liho. He definitely got his spirit back.
"Great. Same time as always?"
"Yep!"
"Alright then- Puppy here is all good to go home." Alex declares with a smile. I gave a little clap, before picking him and Liho up and putting them in their carriers.
"Thank you..."
"What for?" Alex asks confused.
"For being the best-" He laughs.
"No, thank you for helping me save him."
"That's my job-" Alex jokes.
"But seriously. I would never not help him, so justcome by whenever you need it." I picked up the carriers, quickly kissed him on the cheek and basically ran through the door.
"See you next week!" I shouted on my way out.
"Uh-Ah-Yeah. See you next week!" he answered while stumbling over hiswords.
