During extreme weather conditions, a climber must possess the wisdom to determine...

The woman rings a bell, calling people down.

... when evacuation is inevitable . A controlled alpine descent...

The footsteps of children running down the stairs can be heard.

... begins with the girding of one's loins. And the anchoring of the climbing rope to one's enemy...

The children stood behind their respected seats. Along the far side, sat One, Two, Five and Eight. On the other side of the table, sat Three, Four and six. And in the end of the table sat Seven. While the woman stood off to the side.

... the mountain. The Dülfersitz rappel is the preferred method for descent,...

Then an older man came walking in and took his place at the head of the table.

... when the rope is the only available tool, but must be regarded as a last resort. Begin by looping the rope...

"Sit" The man commanded and sat down. The children obeyed without a comment.

The record continues talking in the background as the children and the man ate in silence. They all did their own thing while eating.
The man listens to the record.
One and Three were giving eachother loving looks across the table.
Two was carving something into the arm of his chair.
Four was rolling some paper that looked like a cigarette.
Six was reading a book.
Five was staring the man down.
Eight was staring at a rose she produced contently.
And Seven was just calmly eating her dinner.
This how dinners always looked like. Silent. Isolated. Gloomy.
Then Five stabs his knife into the table, startling everyone. All heads were turned to him while he payed no attention and continued to stare the old man down.
"Number Five." He finally said.
"I have a question." He replied not so calmly. Everyone continued to eat again but listening intensely to the conversation.
The man continued eating and said "Knowledge is an admirable goal, but you know the rules. No talking during mealtimes. You are interrupting Herr Carlson." Pointing his knife at the record that was playing in the background.
"I want to time travel." The boy said simply.
"No."
"But I'm ready. I've been practicing my spatial jumps just like you said." Then he spatial jumps from his chair next to the man and said, "See?"
The man pays him no mind and continues eating but says, "A spatial jump is trivial when compared with the unknowns of time travel. One is like sliding along the ice the other is akin to descending blindly into the depth of the freezing water and reappearing as an acorn." Then takes a sip of whatever he had in his glass.

The boy looks at Eight and she gives him a look that says, 'see, I told you'.
He payed her no mind and turned to the man and said,"Well i don't get it."
"Hence the reason you're not ready."
The boy looks back at the girl. Her and Seven were both shaking their heads as to say 'just leave it for another time'. Seven even whispered a 'no'.
He ignores them and continues pestering the man. "I'm not afraid."
"Fear isn't the issue." The man said, "The effects it might have on your body, even on your mind, are far too unpredictable." He then throws his cutlery onto the table, clearly irritated by this conversation. "Now, I forbid you to talk about this anymore."

The boy turns around and storms out of the room. "Number Five!?" The man shouts. Eight drops her cutlery and looks at Five in horror. "You haven't been excused! " The man continues while Eight scoffs at what's happening in front of her. She stood up and followed Five. "Number Eight?" His eyes are now on her. "Come back here. Both of you!".
