All week, Mim has been thinking of ways to do this. Her sisters bugging her about it was one thing, then Tiny told Nova and Nash and they were in on it too. They were all just waiting for Mim to finally make a move and Mim was a little, a lot, terrified.
But she was going to do this. Thursday. Today. After school. Just walk up to her and say, "Willyougoonadatewithme."
Though maybe having her eyes open would've been a better way to see her reaction and maybe if she didn't mumble the words out so quickly she wouldn't have to repeat herself.
"Um. What?" Katelyn asked as they stood by her car.
Mim had to open her eyes to look at Katelyn and realize she was genuinely confused and not trying to embarrass her. So Mim took a deep breath, kept her eyes open and tried again.
"Would you, maybe, want to go on a date? With me?" Mim said slower this time without looking away.
"Yes." Katelyn replied with a really big smile on her face.
"Wait. Really?" Mim asked, incredulously shocked and Katelyn just nods her head with the smile still on her face.
"Oh, wow. Okay. Okay. Okay." Mim says as she starts to pace in mild panic.
"Mim? Are you okay?" Katelyn asks with concern and slight frown on her face
"What? Yeah. Yeah." Mim says and she stops directly in front of Katelyn to look at her. "Friday? Tomorrow? Night? After the stream?"
"Okay. I'll meet you at your house?" Katelyn asks with a slight tilt of her head
"NO!" Mim half shouts quickly and shocks Katelyn, "Sorry, no. I'd like to pick you up at your house? Like a proper date? Is that silly? Oh maybe it's silly? You know what, never-" Mim stops halfway when she feels Katelyn's hand on her arm.
"Not silly, it sounds great. I'll see you tomorrow night, at my house after the stream." Katelyn says reassuringly and the smile is back on her face
Mim nods and says "Tomorrow night. Yeah. Okay." Figuring that it's a good time to start backing away, Mim does and calls out one more "Tomorrow night" before she turns around and heads to her car where Liza was waiting for her.
When she gets into the passenger seat and buckles in, she immediately rests her forehead on the dashboard and lets out a groan.
"So, how'd it go?" Liza asks as she starts to drive away from the parking spot, stealing glances over at Mim as she makes her way out of the school gates
"I was a blubbering fool." Mim says with her head still pressed to the dashboard.
"That's not new. But what did she say?" Liza scoffs and asks
"HEY! I resent that." Mim protests as she sits back up, "and she said yes." She adds in a mumble
"EEEP!" Liza squeals and literally vibrates with excitement causing the car to swerve just a tiny bit.
"LIZA! I'd like to actually be alive to go on this date? So could you please...?" She admonishes with a hand gesturing towards the road.
"Oops, sorry." Liza says sheepishly and refocuses on getting them home safely. "I'm just really proud of you Mims! Look at you! You're doing so many things that make you step out of your comfort zone! I'm just happy for you." Liza says earnestly
"Thanks Lizzy. I couldn't do any of this without you. Or Mia, or Tiny. It feels good." Mim sighs out contentedly.
The rest of the ride is spent in relative silence, the soft hums of the radio keeping them company and distracted.
