Chapter 6: Good Girls, Bad Guys
I wince as I turn up the volume on The Little Mermaid. I had had trouble getting Jessie to fall back asleep so I wound up putting movie after movie in to try to lull her back to sleep. Though Jessie was completely oblivious to the shouting down the hall I wasn’t, and it was really starting to tick me off. Andre had practically kicked open the side door and marched into Jayme’s room waking up Jessie who he was trying to get to go to bed. All the boys except Jason had then crammed into Jace’s room and the shouting had begun.
I could only catch little parts of the conversation but from what I did hear Jace hadn’t filled Andre in on what had happened between us. My head snapped up when I heard a crash and I gently set Jessie down and headed towards Jace’s room. The door was cracked so all I had to do was stand out of sight and listen.
“I asked you to do one thing! One simple thing Jayme, keep an eye on my little sister and don’t let her near Jason. How hard is that? Seriously? And you Jace, you were supposed to help, you’re her best friend it really shouldn’t have been that hard to keep her away from him.” Andre was furiously pacing back and forth looking ready to pick something else up and throw it.
“Andrew, calm down alright, it’s not like she’s miserable, they’re actually really happy together, and Jason has gotten better, you need to give the kid more credit.” Jayme piped in
“Shut up Jay, I wasn’t asking your opinion, I don’t like her anywhere near him, am I the only one that remembers last time? It took her months, to even come back over here.”
Jace jumps off of the bed and stands in front of Andrew, “ I like Jason even less than you do, but they are happy together like Jayme said, and I can’t do much in the way of protecting her anymore, especially if she refuses to speak to me.” Jace’s tone implied that I was the one that was at fault here and it pissed me off even more than them discussing my relationship had.
Finally fed up, I pushed the door completely open. Everyone stopped to look at me as I spoke up. “Okay Andrew, this has gone too far. I don’t need anybody to be watching out for me, nor do I need their protection, I’m all grown up so you can just chill the hell out, and Jace why don’t you tell Andrew why we’re really not speaking. Hmm?”
Andre turned to Jace, his brow raised in question. “Well?” he asked Jace took a deep breath “I started dating this girl Kassandra and some words were said and so Cass doesn’t like her, so I broke up with her, but then we got back together and Cass gave me and ultimatum-which I totally didn’t think she was serious about by the way- and I chose Kassandra. Cass and I haven’t talked in three weeks. But I broke up with her last night.” I look at Jace hopefully. “Really” I ask
He smirked and shook his head. “Nah, not really.”
My expression quickly hardened. “Jace Moore you can go to hell.” I spat at the same time Andre’s fist connected with Jace’s nose. I turned and left the room. Andre and Jayme made to go after me, but I shook my head, “Don’t, I just need to be by myself for a little bit okay?” I started running once I was out the door, and soon I found myself out by the old pond.
Collapsing on the dock that jutted out into the middle of the pod, I crumpled in on myself, finally breaking down and releasing all of my bottled up tears. After a little while I hear footsteps behind me. I quickly sniffle and wipe my eyes, trying and failing to seem composed. “I thought I told everyone to leave me the hell alone?” I snap.
“Is that any way to welcome me home honey?” an all too familiar voice asks, and I automatically smile and turn around. “Weston dear, is that you come home once again?” I ask, in my best southern accent.
“Babe, let me tell you a train from Philadelphia to Atlanta, then a plane to Dallas and finally a cab back home is no small feat.” He smiles, and holds his arms open for a hug. Clutching him tight to me, I breathe in the familiar scent of his Axe body wash and chuckle. “Nobody told you to study in London for a semester W.J.”
Weston was Jeanette and Adam’s only son together, he was only a few months older than me, but unlike me had a serious issue with being in one place for too long, he always jumped at foreign exchange programs, and summer internships, mostly to get away from his family, he wasn’t the youngest but he did get the brunt of the ridicule. He’d been in London for a semester on his latest adventure, and I hadn’t heard from him since his send off at the end of the summer.
“So why were you crying darling?” He asks. I tilt my face away, ashamed that he caught me bawling my eyes out. “Andres home.” I say in an attempt to change the subject. Weston chuckles. “Yeah I know. He punched me in the jaw on my way through.” Wes grunts.
I struggle to stifle a laugh. “Well maybe you shouldn’t kiss and bail on his kid sister.” I say. Bea, Andre and I had given Weston a ride to the airport after his going away party. At the gate Weston had kissed me, then ran to catch his plane. Needless to say the kiss complicated things. I obsessed over it for weeks, while he was gallivanting around in London. He ignored all my calls, and I know he had cell service since he checked in with his mother every week.
I soon got over it, and there was really no need to scold him about it now seeing as how I was dating his older brother. “So how long are you staying for this time?” I ask.
“I’m actually here till the end of the summer; I might even stay for senior year.” I’m genuinely surprised by his answer. Weston has been to a different high school each new semester, and he rarely stays in town for longer than a couple weeks. I pull back from the embrace that we’re still tangled up in.
“Well then, I guess you’ll be here for your big bro’s sweet eighteen then huh?” I quickly walk away before he can answer, running back into the house. Only to be swept up into Jason’s arms.
“Where are you off to in such a hurry?” He asks, with a grin. “I was coming to get you actually. Do you want to go see a movie or something? I mean, I know it’s late but there is this new one in theatres that is supposed to be really good.”
Before he can answer Andre breezes past us and grabs my hand, sparing a glare for Jason. “Date nights a no-go Cass, Mom’s back, and she wants a fake family dinner. Something about having a producer over or some crap. But anyway the order is to be home in twenty minutes no exceptions.” I groan no in the mood to play the perfect family role for mom and whoever she’s trying to schmooze. Sparing an apologetic glance at Jason, I sigh and follow Andre out of the house.
