In no time at all, the trio reached the end of the damp tunnel and exited into a dank, torn up old house.
"Guys?" Lyra said quietly. "I think we're in the shrieking shack." Hermione nodded.
They followed the muddy paw prints and the sounds of Ron's groaning in pain all the way up the stairs and into a room that looked like it might have been a bedroom, a while ago. Harry held Lyra's hand the whole time.
"Ron." He said once they spotted him, half sitting up and half laying on an old scarlet bed. They hurried over to him. His leg was bent in a way that it definitely shouldn't be. "The dog, where is it?"
"Harry, it's a trap. He's the dog, he's an animagus." Ron pointed to a dark corner, where, when they turned, they saw a skinny man, his dark, shoulder length hair almost matted to his head.
Sirius Black.
Lyra felt the colour drain from her face. The thing she wanted most in the world at that moment was to safe, with all her friends, back in Gryffindor tower.
"If you want to kill Harry, you'll have to kill us too!" Hermione said, bravely stepping in front of Harry, placing herself between him and Black.
"No. Only one will die tonight." A murderous glint shone on his face. Lyra stared into his storm grey eyes, they looked like hers. Too much like hers. It was unsettling. She too stood in front of Harry.
"Then it'll be you!" Harry yelled, shoving the girls out of his way and charging at Black, knocking him to the ground and pointing his wand at his face.
Black only grinned dangerously. "Are you going to kill me, Harry?" He laughed maniacally.
At that moment, the door burst open and in flew Lupin, who disarmed Harry and gestured for him to move. He did.
"Well, well, Sirius. Looking rather ragged, aren't we?" He asked the man, still on the floor, his amber eyes shone with tears. "Finally the flesh reflects the madness within."
"Well, you'd know all about the madness within, wouldn't you, Remus?" Lupin lowered his wand and
-Lyra almost fainted- helped Black to his feel again. They embraced, and Lyra felt as though there would never be anyone she could trust again. They hugged for what felt like an eternity. When they pulled apart at last, Lyra could just hear Lupin whisper to Black.
"Where is he, Sirius?" Black pointed a sharp, dirty, fingernail at Ron, who was white as a sheet and now looking quite greenish.
"I found him. It's him." Sirius repeated. Lupin nodded in agreement. "Let's kill him."
"NO!" Lyra screamed, close to tears but still full of fury. "I trusted you! And all this time you've been his friend!"
"Lyra-" Lupin started before being interrupted.
"I didn't tell anyone! I covered it up for you!"
"You're wrong." Said Lupin plainly. "I haven't been Sirius's friend for twelve years, but I am know. Let me explain."
"No! Harry don't trust him, he's been helping Black into the castle, he wants you dead too, he's a werewolf." She yelled.
"Not up to your usual standard, Lyra." Lupin's face fell, and he paled even further. He looked regretful, but only for a second. "How long have you known?"
"Ages. Since Snape gave that essay." Hermione joined.
"Well, well, well. You two really are the brightest witches of your age."
