Chapter twenty three.
Silas's pov:

She had been distant ever since she left my room that day. Perhaps it was something her father said. I hadn't really been one to seek her out either, but I figured she'd want some time alone.

Plus I have a lot of work these days. Gets like that when you have an asshole of a father who can't do his job right.

Today I'd finally have a day off. My mother insisted on taking me to look for wedding rings as I refused to take hers and my fathers. I wouldn't want anything that connected me to him. His last name is far more than enough.

"So how is things with you and Katherine?" My mother asked as we wandered around in the jewelry shop.

"Good I assume." I said trying to avoid the topic. Also how would I know when I hadn't spoken to her in almost a week.

"What? Do you not talk to her?" She stopped in the middle of the store giving me a stern look. The mom look. Scariest look a man can get.

"She hasn't spoken to me either." I argued.

She hit my arm with her palm. "Silas!"

We looked at a few more rings and she kept telling me all the special things about all of them. One she said was made of pure diamonds from Botswana. She really had done her research.

"These are very nice." I said pointing to a pair of rings. "Think she'd like the big diamond."

There was a reason why she wasn't with us for the ring choosing. My mom insisted on us keeping the traditions. In our family it's always the man who picks out the ring for his wife. I think it was originally like that to create some sort of ownership over the woman.

"Oh yes, it's beautiful. I think she'll love it." My mother said kissing my cheek before going over to the owner's to tell them we'd found a ring.

After we went to a restaurant to eat dinner. "We should talk about the honeymoon." My mother said picking up her phone. "I've looked at a few places, but I'd like to know what you think."

She handed me her phone showing me a picture. "I was thinking of booking you guys a cabin in the Maldives. It's truly beautiful there." She wasn't lying. It was very beautiful there.

It was an island so it wouldn't be too crowded. A great getaway from life. "I can show you other destinations too." She offered thinking I didn't like it.

"No—no it's great." She furrowed her eyebrows as she could see my mood suddenly changing.  It wasn't because I didn't like the place or that I wasn't excited for this, it was the fact that by each day that went by this became more and more real.

And at the moment what me and Katherine had was not real. Not like it was supposed to be when you're getting married to someone. But what can you expect from an arranged marriage or a marriage in the mafia at all.

There isn't time for happiness, joy or love in our world. So what I might've or think I might've felt was not real. How could it be when our lives are as fucked up as they are.

When I got home I was greeted by something unexpected. Ezra's car was parked in the middle of the driveway the door still open.
