"WAKE UP, YOU WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT!" boomed a voice.

Violet got up sleepily and walked over to the door, opening it and said, "As I'm worthless, I'm not going to do anything. That'd give me worth." She shut the door and returned to bed. Owen would run to Stephanie again, that was for certain.

Violet shrugged. She'd sleep now, later comes later.

The next time she woke up it was to her Stephanie grabbing her hair and pulling it.

"Why are you not up yet?" she asked.

"As I'm sleeping. Good night-" Violet curled up again and fell asleep.

Stephanie sighed. "I already have to deal with Owen and you too. Plus, we have to get you a dress for the Mate Ball."

"Mate Ball? Tomorrow, let's worry about that tomorrow." Violet mumbled, trying to go back to sleep.

"Come on. If you get up now, I'll let you choose the dress." Stephanie spoke.

"Can I wear hoodie and jea-" Violet started.

"No. Absolutely not. You'll wear a gown. I'll let you choose the gown. Now come on, get up." Stephanie insisted.

"Fine, up, me gettin' up," Violet muttered sleepily and got up. She pointed at the door and added, "Out."

Once Stephanie left, Violet fell back to bed. After around 5 minutes, she got up and finished with her morning routine, and went downstairs to Stephanie and Owen arguing.

"For that stupid bitch? Really?" Owen glared at Stephanie.

"Oh, come on! It's the Mate Ball - if she isn't good looking there, people will say bad things about you." Stephanie argued.

Stephanie was a bitch, a total slut when she first came. She'd treat Violet like shit and well, was worse than her father. But Violet stayed the same. She'd laugh, she'd joke, she'd even make fun of Stephanie when Stephanie was beating her. And Owen was a wailing child, he couldn't do anything by himself.

Soon, Stephanie gave up and started to treat Violet a tad better. She'd sound annoyed and wouldn't beat Violet anymore. It didn't work. Stephanie didn't like it if it didn't work.

Stephanie also found out that if she treated Violet nicely, Violet would sometimes listen to her. Sometimes was better than never, right?

"Morning, people!" Violet said cheerily.

Owen glared at her while Stephanie looked at what she was wearing.

"Violet, what are you wearing! Not even the poooorest person on Earth would wear that!" Stephanie ranted in a disapproving manner.

"I'm not a person, I'm a devil," Violet smiled.

Stephanie sighed. "Come on."

Violet followed.

Violet got out of the car and followed Stephanie. Stephanie pushed her through the door and dragged her around before finally stopping to an area packed with thousands of gowns. They had all shapes and sizes.

"Violet, how about this one?" Stephanie said holding a gown which was not to Violet's taste.

"No." Violet spoke and turned away. She scanned the whole room. None of them fit her liking. Biting her lower lip, she walked up and down the rows, trying to find one dress she'd like.

What color should she choose?

Dark blue maybe, or red?

She could take a random one.

Okay, a random red one.

It helped Violet that the gowns were color-coded. She went over to the Red-Section and closed her eyes. She hoped she'd get a nice one.

She raised her hand forward, closing her eyes, and chose a dress randomly. The dress material felt soft against her hands. It had been a long while since Violet wore something fancy. The last time was when her mother took her to one of the parties, where Violet wore a pearl-white dress. Of course, she ruined the dress with stains later - the thing was, no one blamed her then. They'd say she was little and it was fine. But now, Violet knew this dress would last until the last time she had to go to the Mate Ball.

Maybe she'd get one more fancy dress after that, in her whole life, but she wasn't worried about that; she liked jeans and t-shirt next to dresses.

When Violet opened her eyes, she took in the beauty of the dress. The dress looked simple enough to Violet. Although, she liked it, she'd prefer not wearing it. It would look beautiful on someone else. Maybe Stephanie even. But not Violet.

Violet had little knowledge when it came to clothing. She'd rather wear a simple jeans and t-shirt or hoodie than dresses. And neither did she know if it was eligible for a ball, but she'd take it. After all, what else would she take? She didn't like any other gowns.

When Violet showed the dress to Stephanie, she agreed on it, but with a fuss.

"Oh my god, Violet! Yes, yes, beautiful, darling. I didn't know you had choices that good; I should bring you along the next time I go shopping! Just to pick my dresses, you know. But yes, good one!"

Violet could only nod along.

During the long traffic back home, Violet asked Stephanie if she's ever been to a Mate Ball.
Stephanie nodded. "Of course, I've been," said she, "It is mandatory for every girl to attend. Well, every girl in that state. If they think one might need transportation or help, they'd tend to them. I don't know why, but regardless if the girls are mated to one of the werewolves or not, if a girl isn't well dressed, the werewolves would track the family down and well, strip them of their rights."

Violet nodded. If what Stephanie said was right, Violet didn't understand them. They were horrible to humans. They thought themselves above humans. But then again, why didn't they strip the humans of all rights? Why keep some when the humans were lower than them? Maybe to show mercy? To show how amazing they were?

Oh well, Violet didn't have any pushes to worry about that, so she let it go. Although the questions were nagging at the back of her mind.
