His saving grace

Chapter 3: She's like a breath of fresh air

Bucky had been there for a little over a week and for once in his very long life he felt like he wasn't going to go crazy or have to fight he felt calm an it was all because of her. She was all he could think about all the time her presence was enough to make him smile. They had spent a lot of time together this past week and everyone noticed the way they looked at each other even Tony knew. Today was a weird day though, when Bucky woke up he went to look for Jc but to his surprise she wasn't there so he checked the library and she wasn't there either he was beginning to get worried when he saw Steve in the hall. "Hey punk have you seen Jc anywhere I can't find her?" Steve noticed how worried he was " Um yea she left early this morning for a mission she told me to tell you 'she'd be back by dinner hopefully if not she was sorry and to not to worry she was fine' so don't worry to much she'll be back before you know it."  he let out a breathe "Ok I just woke up and she wasn't here so I got worried." "No I get it pal no need to explain yourself if you want we can have a guys day maybe go to Brooklyn get something to eat, see some the old places then grab a drink?" he smiled "Yea that sounds great let me get ready." Steve looked really excited "Take your time no rush I'll be in my room when you're ready to go." and with that Bucky went to get ready.

Once they got there they found an old restaurant that they liked and found a table. They talked about Wakanda and the team and then Steve asked the question everbody wanted an answer to but maybe they didn't know the answer. "Are you ever going to tell me what's going on between you and Jc?" "What do you mean we're just friends that's all I mean I barley know anything about her." his mouth was saying one thing but his face was saying another "That's not true you've spent the whole week together and you guys seem to be pretty close and I see the way you look at her its like she's the only one in the room." Bucky knew what he was trying to say "Yea so maybe I like spending time with her and I really like her smile and how much she loves to talk about the new book she just started but its only been a week I don't want to rush it plus who knows how she feels so for now I'm gonna stick to being her friend." he was out of breath and blushing hard. "Listen Buck you know I love you and I get that you just met her but I know for a fact that she feels the same. The way she looks at you and the way she talks about you when you're not there she definitely feels the same even if she doesn't know it yet." he was looking at Steve with surprised eyes he knew he felt something but he didn't want to ruin the friendship they ere building and maybe it hurt him but she meant to much to him to lose this quickly. 

After lunch they walked around and saw a few places they use to go when they were little and even saw the old apartment building they use to live in when they were little. It all brought back memories for both of them and maybe it hurt but it felt good to be back in a place he was once happy in. He never wanted to leave after the war he was gonna come back home and move in with Steve get a job at one of the local businesses and then hopefully marry. He had all these plans and they never happened but looking back he didn't want them to he had his bestfriend and now he had Jc that's all he wanted for now and maybe one day that could grow into a bigger future but for now he was going to focus on the present and not the past. After a few hours of walking it was almost about 6:00 so the decided to head back to the compound and maybe catch a drink later that night. 

When they got back to the compound Furry was there and he looked mad "Hey Furry what's going on?" he let out a breath "What's going on is these dumbasses sent Jc out on a mission by herself when they know she's not suppose to and now she's in the med bay." Bucky stopped dead in his tracks he wasn't sure if he heard that right Jc was hurt? "How bad is it?" was all he could get out "She's got 2 broken ribs a punctured lung and a broken right clavicle not to mention the bruises and cuts all over her. You sent her on a 3 person mission knowing damn well that she could get hurt!" by then Bucky didn't care what they were saying he just started running for the med bay "Bucky wait!" but he didn't stop he just kept running "Let him go Rodgers he's worried." When he got to the med bay he saw her in a bed and his heart dropped he walked up to a nurse and asked "Is it ok if I see her I'm a friend?" "Yea its just be careful ok?" he smiled "I will thank you so much." she gave him a small smile "She's going to be ok sir she just need's a little rest, her bones heal quickly so by tomorrow she should be on the mend." he let out a breath he didn't realize he had been holding "Thank you." and with that he walked away and went to go sit with her. He didn't care what time it was or how late he was down there he didn't want her to wake up alone and to be honest he was scared if he left her he'd lose her. Sometime that night a nurse brought in an extra bed, a pillow, and a blanket and he laid there for the rest of the night making sure to check in on her every so often.
