I dragged my suitcases through the streets of Poplar, illuminated by the street lamps. It was late evening, perhaps around eight or nine, so thankfully the road was mostly empty.

Sighing in relief as I approached the large building of Nonnatus House, I picked up my pace, freezing in the cold winter air and quite looking forward to the warm indoors.

I reached the top of the stairs, placed my two heavy suitcases down beside me, and rang the bell, breathing deeply and only now realising how nervous I was to start this new job.

The big wooden doors opened, revealing a young woman, about the same age as me, with dark brown hair and enchanting green eyes.

"Hello," she smiled.
"Um... hi! I'm [y/n] [y/l/n]... I'm the new midwife,"
"Of course you are," she replied, leading you into the hall. "Do come in. You must be freezing,"

I followed her inside, observing my surroundings.

"Wow. This looks wonderful," I breathed, taking everything in.
"Yes, this building is truly beautiful," she sighed. "Here, let me take one of your bags! They must be so heavy. I'm Valerie, by the way. Valerie Dyer,"

Valerie lead me up the grand staircase and along the landing. She opened the door to a bedroom, with two single beds.
"And this... is your room!" She grinned. "I've been looking forward to a roommate."

I heaved my suitcases onto my bed and watched as Valerie cleared a space in the wardrobe for my clothes. I started unpacking the bags and transferring the clothes to hangers.

"Woah... are these all your clothes? They're lovely!" Valerie said admiringly, holding a blue silk dress against herself.
"Well, we look about the same size. You must borrow it sometime," I said.
"Really? Oh, you're too kind!"

All of a sudden, there came a loud knock on the bedroom door.
"Come in!" Valerie called. A pretty blonde woman wearing a pink dressing gown stepped into the room.

"Val, have you seen my hair rollers? I can't seem to find them anywh-" she trailed off as she noticed me standing by my bedside table.

"Oh... hello! I didn't know there was a new nurse. How lovely! What's your name?"

"I'm [y/n]. Um... hi!" I say, rather intimidated by this confident woman.

"Trixie Franklin. Well, I must get back to searching for those bloody hair rollers... see you, Val, see you, [y/n]." She said, and left the room.

I looked at Valerie for reassurance. Trixie seemed lovely, but very... bold. I was extremely shy and introverted, so I hoped that we would get along.

"Don't mind her. She's wonderful once you get to know her. Just... quite intimidating at first. Well, it's getting late," Valerie said, looking at her watch. "I'm going to change for bed. We can celebrate your first night at Nonnatus with a little champagne," Valerie giggled, reaching into the cabinet and pulling out a bottle.

"Is that allowed?" I asked, fully aware that this was a convent.
"Well... not really... but we haven't got caught," she replied.
"Yet," I added.

She took off her red cardigan and unbuttoned her dress. My heart started to beat a little faster so I quickly turned my back, not wanting Valerie to see my pink cheeks. It wasn't Valerie herself- or at least I didn't think so- but nobody knew I liked girls, and I wanted it to stay like that.

"What's the matter, silly? We're girls together, aren't we?"
"Yes, of course," I take a deep breath, free my mind of impure thoughts and changed into my nightclothes.

Valerie poured me a glass of the fizzy champagne.

"To your new job," she giggled.
"To my new job," I said, and we both took a sip.

A sudden knock on the door made me nearly choke on my drink.

"Oh, sorry sweetie! Didn't mean to startle you!" Trixie said as she burst into the room and sat down next to Valerie on the bed opposite. Another woman, with short brown hair followed her, and sat next to me on my bed.

"Hello. My name's Barbara. Trixie told me about you. I'm so pleased to meet you." she said sweetly.

"Found your hair rollers then," Valerie smirked at Trixie.
"Yes I did, thank you," She said sarcastically, patting her neatly-piled blonde hair.

"Champagne, Trixie?" Valerie offered.
"Oh... no thanks Val. Alcohol is beastly on the complexion."
"Suit yourself," she shrugged. "Babs?"
"Ooh, yes please," she said, holding out her glass. "Trixie, do you know where Delia is?"
"I think she's in her room. Since Patsy left, she's been quite... distant."

Barbara nodded.
"Who are Patsy and Delia?" I asked.
"Delia's a nurse at The London Hospital, but she lives with us at Nonnatus. Patsy was her best friend, but she left because her father was dying. They were ever so close. We hope she will return soon, don't we, Barbara?" Trixie said.

"Yes, we miss her terribly,"

There was a moment of silence, before Valerie piped up, "Trixie, do you reckon Pats and Delia could have ever been... anything... more?"
"Oh Val, we've had this conversation before. It would have been... so dangerous. I don't have a problem with people who are... that way, but society does. I think it's best we steer clear of the topic,"
Val nodded, and sipped her champagne.

"It's really late. I must head to bed, I don't want to fall asleep in the middle of clinic tommorrow!" Barbara said, and left the room, followed by Trixie.
"Goodnight, Val. Night, [y/n]."

Once they were gone, I turned to Val. "Wow," I breathed. "Alot of information for one night."

"Yep. Life here is a little hectic. You'll get used to it. I'll wake you tommorrow, six-thirty. You can have the bathroom first. Then I'll show you to the clinical room, where your medical bag will be. I dare say you can come with me on my rounds. Goodnight, [y/n]. I really can't wait to get to know you,"

I smile, feeling an odd sort of feeling in my chest. "Thank you ever so much, Valerie. Goodnight."

She switched the bedside lamp off, and we both fell asleep.
