The main purpose of confidants towards gameplay is ✨ being hot ✨. Just kidding. It actually is assisting your partner's growth. The main way they do this is through bond points. You'll wanna give priority to confidants bonded to your top partners.
So now you may be wondering which confidants to boost, and how high.

UPGRADING CONFIDANTS

For the sake of optimization, you should pick confidants bonded to partners that you want in your debate team. And your top confidant (in terms of intimacy and ATTR) should, in theory, be bonded to your top partner. This will optimize the benefit of the bond points given by your confidant.
But I'm gonna be completely honest here... it's up to you which confidant to make your top. Of course, when you lay your eyes on the confidants, you'll form a bias; be it based on looks or personality. While it may not be optimal to follow your bias, I honestly don't recommend against it... (I meannnn, you can always adjust your partners so that the partners bonded to your bias become your top partners, so thus your top confidant is once again bonded to your top partner!) (woooooow, I'm being a bad influence AGAIN! Go, me !!!)
Anyways, the point is, to get the most out of your darling confidant, your top partner(s) should be bonded to them.
And now that we've covered who to upgrade, let's discuss HOW.
There are two main things to upgrade about confidants: Intimacy and Confidant ATTRs. Both have pretty sweet benefits to the rest of gameplay, and are worth investing in! Note that your top Intimacy confidant should also ideally be top in Confidant ATTR.
Intimacy
The intimacy of your confidant will affect several gameplay aspects.
Banquets
Firstly, it'll affect Banquet Points income (to a certain extent). If you get your confidant to 400 intimacy, you can get +100% (double!) of the base bond points from both hosting and attending banquets, which is the max gain you can get from raising Intimacy. After level 400, you may choose to stop upgrading your confidant's intimacy, which is fine, but there are reasons to keep upgrading them that we'll discuss later; one which is to show off your love for your confidant when hosting a banquet! I mean, if you host a banquet with your level 816 confidant, they'll be the envy of every other confidant in town LOL.
There is just one tiiiny issue with upgrading the intimacy level so high; if, for whatever reason, you want to attend a second banquet with your top confidant today, and their intimacy level is 816, it will take 816 ingots to restore them to attend the banquet with .A. That's because the cost to restore a confidant to attend a second banquet before reset is equal to the intimacy level. This shouldn't be a big issue though, unless you regularly restore your top confidant to attend banquets twice.
