"Italians have a little joke, that the world is so hard a man must have two fathers to look after him, and that's why they have godfathers." ~ Tom Hagan, The Godfather by Mario Puzo.
The next week was spent laying low. Just because we were sure that Nicky wouldn't risk anymore hired help to take me down did not mean we were going to assume I was safe. When I wasn't shut up in my penthouse, I was over at the Torchwick Estate with Tukson and Sienna Khan.
The plot to place an especially sharp dagger into Adam's back was proceeding slowly but it was starting to gain traction. George had managed to bring in a few White Fang members who were sympathetic into the fold. Sadly I left the meetings to Cardin who personally chauffeured them for their private meetings. For a good while I wanted to be there with them and see these events play out, but between personal visitors keeping me up to date on the management of the Family and trying to keep my head on my shoulders, I was forced to hear everything second hand. Not that Cardin or Sienna were leaving anything out and listening to both of them report on the situation, I was at least able to tell that Sienna was being straightforward with me as our intel on the Fang developed.
"George managed to get a hold of this." Sienna said, sliding a folded piece of paper across the table towards me. We were in the library, I honored the old house rule of no business talk at the dinner table. Sienna hardly waited for me to sit down and take out a cigar before trying to spark the conversation on their development.
I took the folded piece of paper and looked at it. It was a list of addresses, one listed after the other. Most of them didn't mean much to me at first glance, but one did catch my eye. "3838 East Elm Street... isn't that a police station?" I asked her.
"It is." Sienna said as she picked up her glass of wine. "It's a list of safehouses, followed by targets they're planning to strike whenever Adam's plan goes down. George committed this list to memory and I had to write it down. He has a good head on his shoulders for this kind of thing."
"You get used to it if you give it enough time." I said speaking from experience. "So this safe house is planning to attack a police precinct? It sounds like a sucide mission."
"It might be." Sienna admitted. "I doubt Adam cares if it actually succeeds. Most of these targets are like this. Adam is using whatever forces he still has here in the city to attack its basic infrastructure. They're police precincts and fire stations, hospitals, power stations, there's even one for a water treatment plant."
"Gods." I said trying to imagine all of that going down. "He's really trying to cripple the city to its barest bones."
"It's what he's learned." Sienna explained to me. "When we were focused on the Schnee Dust Company, we always tried to hit what would cripple them the most. Stealing dust wasn't enough to cut into their bottom line. We hit whatever they relied upon the most for the longest lasting effect. And this is just what we've managed to get a hold of. George believes this is only a third of the safehouses and targets."
"Think of how that would affect the grimm?" I asked, trying to imagine it. "They'd come and organizing anyone to make any effective counter would be impossible if this is close to even how the breach was."
"You still think this plan of theirs will involve the grimm?" Tukson asked me as he looked over one of the shelves of the library. He had certainly devoured a respectable stack of books since coming to stay here in the estate. I should have figured a former bookstore owner would be an avid reader. I was pleased that he wasn't bored at least.
"It's the only thing that makes sense as far as I can tell." I explained to them. "Even if all of Adam's little safehouses succeed in their missions there is no way they're going to go toe to toe with an Atlesian fleet. They don't have the numbers or the firepower to win that fight. They need something else, they need chaos and we already saw how they were planning on using grimm before. That tunnel to Mountain Glen couldn't be their only way of bringing them to the city. If it was, the fleet could just bombard the place from the skies indefinitely. They need something else."
