A new regular

A week later I made a new friend.

I was working the noon shift, I greatly preferred the later shift, there were fewer people and I didn't have to deal with the lunch rush, but alas, Foolish wanted the later shift today as he had an old friend in town and because he was Puffy's son, he got the later shift.

I heard the bell above the door go off and I groaned internally. I just wanted to go home and watch documentaries. I always wanted to travel but never had the money to, so I watched documentaries instead

"Hi welcome to the Gold Leaf Cafe how can I help you?" I asked, looking up.

There stood a man with blond hair and blue eyes. He had a dark green cardigan. He looked at me almost confused.

"Sir?" I asked.

He seemed to snap out of his bewilderment.

"Sorry, you looked like someone I know." He said.

"Really? I don't exactly leave the house." I joked.

This caused him to chuckle softly.

"Anyway, what can I get you?"

He looked at the menu for a second.

"I'll take a London fog please." He said.

I nod and put it into the register.

"What size?"

"Medium."

"Can I get a name for that order?"

"Phil." He said.

I nodded and wrote it down on the cup and added the size to the order.

"Alright, that will be $3.75," I said.

He gave me a five-dollar bill and I gave him the change which he then put in the change cup.

He then went to a booth and pulled out a book and started reading. I started making his tea. I was done after a few minutes and called his name. He got up and grabbed his tea, he smiled at me, and I smiled back.

"Thank you, Ace." He said before walking to a booth near a window.

I was wondering how he knew my name before remembering that I had a nametag on my apron.

The day continued. He stayed for an hour and a half then he left with a wave shortly before Foolish arrived for his shift. I watched him walk away through the windows.

He didn't come back for a few days. When he did he seemed almost happy when he saw me. Pfft, yeah right, Ace.

"You're here." He said.

"Yeah, I'm back on my usual shift, I fucking hate the afternoon shift." I froze when I realized I swore. I knew a lot of people hated when I did that.

But when I looked at his face he had a smile.

"Don't we all?" He said with a laugh.

He ordered the London Fog again and sat down at the same booth.

He came back a lot after that, sometimes having a new book, sometimes he worked on a laptop, some days we chatted, some days we didn't. We slowly became friends

One busy day he did something I didn't expect and it almost seemed familiar.

Once again he stayed till closing. It was Saturday so we closed early, once again I didn't have enough money for groceries so I had to skip lunch.

It was dusk when I started cleaning up, Phil was still reading a book, it was a different one this time.

"New book?" I asked.
