Onward, to freshman year...

As Courtney set her lunch tray down at the table, she overheard Bridgette say, "So, are you two going to do it?  You've been together for almost a year."

Gwen leaned across the table. "Would you keep your voice down? And it's only been seven months." She noticed Courtney sit beside Bridgette. "Oh, hey, Courtney."

"Hey."

"'Sup, losers," said Heather as she slid in next to Courtney.

Gwen rolled her eyes.  She leaned forward again to whisper to Bridgette.  "I thought I'd be rid of her when I went goth."

Bridgette shrugged.  "I guess there's no escape for anyone.  I still don't understand what Courtney sees in her."

"What was that?"  Heather asked, but it was interrupted by the boys taking their seats next to their respective ladies.

"School pizza is disgusting."  Duncan pushed his tray away from him.

Geoff chuckled.  "It's barely edible, dude!"

Suddenly, the cafeteria went silent. The group looked around to see what the lack-of-commotion was about. A man stood in the entrance to the cafeteria. He was tall, tan, and, yes, he was handsome. He had a winning smile and electric green eyes that beautifully contrasted with the warm complexion of his skin. Just about every girl in the cafeteria was swooning, some of the boys, too. He walked towards their table.

Bridgette glanced around her friends. "Who is that?"

"Oh my god, he's coming over," added Gwen. "Why is he coming over here?"

Courtney chewed her food and swallowed before answering. "Oh, that's Alejandro. He's new here. I gave him a tour earlier." She waved at him.

"What the fuck, Court? Why didn't you tell us?" Heather gave the new kid a once-over, glaring at him. "More importantly, why didn't you tell me?"

Courtney shrugged. "Hi, Alejandro."

"Hola, señorita. We meet again." Alejandro greeted.

She rolled her eyes. "Duh, when I gave you the tour, I said you could sit with us until you get to know people."

"Yes, I remember. Hola, everyone. I'm Alejandro Burromuerto, and the pleasure is all mine."  His blazing green eyes surveyed each one of them, particularly a certain raven-haired individual.

"Duncan, scoot over, so he can sit down." Courtney demanded. Duncan gave her a weird look; she hadn't spoken to him directly in a long time, but he did as she said. Alejandro took the seat beside him. Courtney introduced him to everyone at the table.  "Last, but not least, Heather."

Heather scoffed and flipped her hair.  "Definitely not least."

"Heather.  What a pretty name," Alejandro smirked.

Her lip curled in disgust.  "Whatever."

"Ignore her; she can't help but be a bitch," remarked Duncan, leaning towards Alejandro.  The two laughed.

"Fuck off, Duncan," Courtney mumbled, rolling her eyes.  She put a hand on Heather's thigh to prevent her from causing a scene.  It worked.  Heather sat satisfied by Courtney's support with a harrumph.

Geoff quickly changed the subject without missing a beat—one of his best qualities.  "Al, you've got perfect timing.  I'm hosting a back-to-school party this Saturday night!  It'll be totally awesome, dudes!"
