Now, let's take it back a couple years...
A corral of pubescent boys whistled at Courtney as she walked by, unable to still the sashay of her early developed curves. She's one of the first girls in the sixth grade to hit puberty. It made her feel gross, especially when all the guys at school were constantly leering. One was being particularly creepy, and it's her on again off again elementary school boyfriend, Duncan Nelson.
"Hey, Princess," the twelve year old delinquent said, leaning against Courtney's shared locker as she's trying to switch out her color coordinated per class folders.
Courtney rolled her eyes and didn't face him. "Leave me alone, Duncan."
"Ah, come on, Princess. You know you love me. You said it yourself." Duncan smirked. "Or did you forget?"
Courtney slammed her locker shut and tightened her grip on her school books. "We were like seven, you neanderthal."
Duncan waggled his eyebrows. "Oo big word. Don't know what it means, so I'm gonna take it as a compliment!"
Courtney huffed and started walking to homeroom. "It's not a compliment."
"Whatever you say, Princess."
Thankfully, Duncan wasn't in her homeroom. The alphabet had proved to be a blessing to her instead of a curse throughout her school years. No need for worry about the forced intermingling between a "Barlow" and a "Nelson." She entered the classroom for the students whose last names were at the beginning of the alphabet and took her seat with a triumphant huff as Duncan sauntered past the doorway to his own homeroom. At her desk, she began her ritual: aligning all of her books perfectly so that they were symmetrical with edges of the tabletop and setting her pencil, eraser, pen, and backups for each in a neat row. Some of her peers would sneer at her and call her an OCD freak, but she preferred the term, "Type-A."
"Hey, Courtney, can I borrow a pencil?" asked the boy in the seat to her left: Cody Anderson. She glared at him. "Woah, what died in your cereal bowl this morning?"
"I'll have you know that I only eat oatmeal and a fruit cup for breakfast." Courtney replied matter-of-factly.
Cody rolled his eyes and looked past her. "Heya, Izzy, can I borrow-um...nevermind..."
Courtney looked to her right at Izzy Crown, who was trying to see how much water could stay in her bellybutton without spilling over. Courtney's lip curled in disgust.
Then, Izzy scrunched her body together and slurped the water from her bellybutton. "Mm! Tangy!" Izzy proclaimed.
Courtney's mouth went agape and, without turning away from the horror show beside her, slid her backup pencil over to Cody. The boy gulped. "Thanks, Courtney."
"Uh huh," responded Courtney, unable to tear her eyes away from Izzy, who now had a crowd of students cheering for her.
Cody shook his head. "Ugh, people are so gross."
She looked over at him, as if for the first time, and cautiously smiled. "I know right?"

At lunch, Courtney invited Cody to sit with her, who happily obliged. He didn't have many friends. Neither did she, except for Duncan. No! Not him. Ever since the rumor that was spread that she gave him cooties on the playground last year, people have avoided her like the plague, unless they were ogling her, of course, for her newfound curves. Plus, cooties were so fifth grade. These were the big leagues now. They were in middle school.
