As one gets older, they realize that certain parts of their life don't have to be in the spotlight. For me, I kept my personal life away from my skating life. But then there are moments when your past comes and surprises you. This is why Yuri and I are on a trip to the United States. It is also why I invited Yakov and Yurio to join us. You see, Yakov knows about my past life, but Yuri and Yurio don't. If I'm going to continue coaching Yuri, I think it's only fair that he starts learning more about me personally as I have about him. A key part of this trip is that it started from a random text message. A message that could have come from anyone. The person they meet might not be the one I was hoping to be. It could be a total stranger. We could get hurt. But it is a risk I wanted to take.
The whole way to the U.S. I could tell Yuri was nervous. At the airport, I could tell Yurio was annoyed and didn't want to be there. Yakov seemed tempered, letting some memories take over his emotions. Yurio and Yuri fell asleep in the van ride from the airport, leaving Yakov, Lilia, and me to talk.
"He had no right to contact you after what he did," Yakov scoffed.
"It was a once in a lifetime opportunity. How could he pass it up? He pursued his dream and even more." I replied.
Lilia took a sip of wine. "He was the best student I ever had, Plisetsky being a close second. His talent has gone to waste."
I held Yuri's hand, interlocking fingers. "We both know he never lets his talent go to waste. It's what he learned from both of you that got him in the position he's in."
"Whatever," Yakov said, crossing his arms. "Hopefully he can help coach Plisetsky for the upcoming season."
I remained silent for the rest of the ride. Lilia and Yakov talked amongst themselves. Once we got to the house, I woke Yuri from his slumber. After unloading our bags from the van, Yakov and Lilia went into the house, searching for the owner. I sent Yuri and Yurio into the ice rink built beside it, as I followed Yakov. Now of course we didn't break into the house. The door simply wasn't closed all the way.
Music flooded the inside. There were subtle sounds singing that matched the tune.
"Where is this pain in the ass?" Yakov asked, adjusting his hat. "I want to give him a piece of my mind."
I closed my eyes, smiling before opening them. "He's in the kitchen. He always sings and listens to music while cooking."
Lilia started walking towards the direction the music was coming from. Yakov and I followed.
"Seems like you were right," she said, as we watched him in the kitchen. He looked over, turned the music down, and smiled. "I see Yakov has some unfinished business with me."
"Of course I do. What gave it away?" Yakov responded.
"I made dinner. The pig is still in the oven. Where's the Yuri? And I'm assuming the other Yuri came too."
"I sent them to your ice rink. We weren't sure where you'd be," I responded.
He checked the time on the oven and put a towel down on the counter. "Let's go get them"
He and I walked outside. I can tell he's changed a lot since I last saw him. His hair is a couple of inches longer than Yurio's, his facial hair is grown out, yet groomed, and he seemed to have bought new glasses too. His muscular physique is even better than mine.
While approaching the doors to the ice rink, he opened the door for me. Walking in, I could see Yuri and Yurio reading an article in one of the glass displays, confused as hell.
"Yuri. Yurio. There's someone I would like you both to meet."
The two of them looked at us, jaws dropped.
