Studying the intricate swirls of gold on the door that hold my future behind it has not been the least helpful.

Surely if I faint or complain of stomach pains, I could get out of this for a little while longer.

I look behind me to my Mama who is sneering at the other young ladies in the room wearing white dresses and feathers on their heads.

What is so graceful about a bird? It just amuses the Queen to have all of us dressed to remind her of birds in cages. Only she can release us from this cage. Our future husbands can release us from the next cage, unless we peck at their eyes and decide to cause a scandal or become spinsters.

Eye-pecking does sound promising.

Before I even have the chance to continue my thought on pecking out the eyes of the unsuitable gentlemen, I hear my name called loudly.

"Lady y/n. Escorted by the noble and honorable Duchess y/m/n."

The doors swing open and all eyes are on me, though I try to not pay them any attention.
My focus must remain in front of me. I cannot look at the Queen, but I do take the time to study what she has chosen to place on her head this time.
Looks like two large elephant ears sewn together.
I smile quietly to myself and keep my head held high, my arms gracefully placed at my sides and my feet gliding on the ground.

Keeping my attention in front of me, I cannot help but notice a large family to my right. A young girl beaming with excitement. A young boy who is much more entertained by what is on the Queens head, not that I can blame him.
A young woman who is very elegant and poised for her age. Another young woman who is clutching her book as if what is inside holds many secrets, and three very handsome gentlemen standing behind the younger ones.

I immediately recognize the older woman as Viscountess Bridgerton. Someone my mother has spoken of many times before the season started. Her daughter must have already been introduced to Society earlier today. Daphne, I think her name was.
I quickly turn my attention back to the Queen before she notices my eyes drifting elsewhere. Slowly I bring my right leg behind my left and bow down as low as my corset would let me.

Breathe.

"It seems we have another gem entering society this season."

The Queen puts her hand gently under my chin, wordlessly telling me to rise.

"A rare gem indeed."

The Queen kisses my forehead and walks back to her chair with the elephant ears remaining intact on her head.

"Thank you your majesty" I say respectively and bow down again.

I turn to leave, but not before making eye contact with a certain Bridgerton, whose blue eyes twinkled with curiosity.

Rare, indeed.
