Chapter 12
"Zara, is that you?" A voice called. I didn't answer. I was going, whether they liked it or not. Suddenly two hands slammed down on my shoulders, yanking me back towards the railing. I heard some shuffling to my right, and turned my head. There he was. Caleb. Standing on the same side of the railings as I was.
"If you jump, I'll jump," he stated firmly. I stared at him in surprise. "Caleb, go home," my voice came out sounding weak. "Why are you doing this?" He asked, exasperated. "Go home," I repeated.
"Not until you tell me why you're doing this."
"Go home, Caleb. Let me die in peace. Go. Forget about me. Live your life."
"No, Zara. I won't forget about you. I can't. I haven't stopped thinking about you since you dumped me for that Ash guy."
A strangled sob escaped my mouth at the mention of his name.
"What is it, Zara? Tell me, please," he pleaded, looking me in the eye. "Come on, let's go to mine and you can tell me what happened."
Before I had time to object, Caleb had swung himself over the railing and was now lifting me over too. "Come," he whispered, tugging on my hand.
I followed him home, not once saying a word. He stopped me. I was about to commit suicide but he stopped me. He still likes me. My heart jumped for joy when the last few words sunk in. Caleb pushed me down into a chair in his lounge and sat facing me. "Now speak," he commanded.
So I told him everything. All about how Kirsten had lied to me and about the dare. Then I got to the part where Ash raped me. I was sobbing into his arms when I had finished with the story.
"That- argh, we have to tell the police, Zara. This is serious."
"I don't want to press charges." I whispered.
"You what?! That guy raped you, Zara! He deserves to be locked up!" Caleb exploded, banging his fist on the table. I jumped and froze. He stared at me with wide eyes. "Oh, Zara, I would never hurt you, okay? I'm not like him. It's okay if you don't want to press charges. I'll protect you."
We sat there, him holding me, for what seemed like hours. I looked up at him. There was something I needed to say. "I love you, Caleb. The last time I said it I wasn't lying, either. You have no idea how much it hurt me to reject you."
"I know, Zarabee, I know. I love you too," he whispered, running a hand down my hair, in a soothing motion. I sighed, content. Now I knew that whatever life threw at us, Caleb and I would get through it together. And he really was hotter than Josh Franceschi.
