"There are five of you, siblings, I suppose you are...." Caillen began. "No, six if you count the ice Queen." His gaze flicked over me. We sat around the fire. On one side were Neffy, Cordgi, Shea, Greyson and Dyami. Then the twins, Bran sat beside me, our dragons sat before us close to the fire. I didn't like how far away Cordgi sat from me. Yet, it had more to do with how we entered the cavern, than anything else. He had been the first in while I was the last.
"The queen was born, as most of you here know, to the kings true love. The lover his father put to death. The child was also slated to be put to death. My knight was ordered by the king's father to end the child's life.
Draccen was a dwarf. The dwarf clans have survived, even thrived, because of their families. They pride themselves on their children. To ask a dwarf to end the life of a healthy child, was akin to asking a knight to slay their own dragon." There were gasps all around the fire. Those golden eyes racked over me. Before searching over the others.
"I know the twins know the story, but Zyn, you may not know just what being a knight means. How bonding with a dragon can elongate a normal human life." I sighed.
"Seriously?" I looked at him. Was he for real? "My oldest friend is almost five thousand years old. They never bonded. I have learned a lot of the dragon lore from them." I stated.
"Who?" Shea glared at me.
"Their name doesn't translate into our language. I just call her Quincy." I shrugged. All eyes were on me now. "What? She lives in the mountains. Its been awhile since I have gone to see her, actually." I frowned at that.
"Call her. Bring her here." Caillen demanded. I was already shaking my head.
"She doesn't leave her mountain. Hasn't since before the ice dragons left." Caillen snarled.
"Are you insane! You know a legendary dragon! And you have kept it a secret" He was on his feet yelling at me. Before another sound could be made inside the cave, the world outside echoed with the roar of a dragon. I blinked.
The very ground we sat on shook with the force of the cry. My head turned toward the sound. "Well, guess she didn't like that." Shea muttered.
"That wasn't her." I whispered. My mind seeking out the source. Before I could locate it, huge thick legs landed outside of the cave. They were light blue, like frozen water.
"MOTHER!" Tanwen cried. The child leapt up racing to the outside, I beat her there, but only by a few steps. Snagging her out of the air as she leapt toward the unknown dragon, I spun around shielding her with my body. She kicked me.
'Relax, child of dragons.' The voice was soft in my head. A caress against my conscious thoughts. It was the mildest of voices. The dragon shimmered in the sun. A sparkling blue white jewel. Her back spikes like deadly rays along her enormous body. The blue/ grey fur that coated her head and neck flowed in the breeze of her landing.
"I told you, we would see each other again." The silver-haired rider swung down to land before me. "If Caillen has come out of hiding, that means Draccen has gone to the neither, and your time has come, dear brother."
The dragon before us shifted. Standing there was an elegant woman. Her flowing blue / grey hair reached to her waist. Long thin fingers clasped her hips as her shimmering white eyes watched us. 'Please allow my daughter to come to me, dragon kin.' Her mental voice was light, airy even. Yet I could detect a strength in her that begged someone to defy her. I could see where Tanwen gets her attitude. I snorted, letting go of the squirming child in my arms. She rushed to the woman, who delightfully scooped her up.
"Did you know, in the nine-hundred and eighty-nine years I have flown with her, she only produced one queen egg." The tall slim woman stated. She moved to stand before me. We locked eyes, on the same level.
