The setting sun threw an orange glow over the Yas Marina track, qualifying was soon to begin and everything would rely on who was able to be the fastest at the right time, who would be able to grab the pole conveniently also gaining the best shot at winning.
The championship had been tight between the four rising stars of Formula 1; Max, Charles, George and Lando and despite the intensity of the close fight, there were no hard feelings between any of them. At the start of the season, the sport and fans alike expected Lewis to dominate the season after taking back the championship from Max after two consecutive championship-winning seasons. They were shocked when it emerged that four teams could be fighting for the two coveted titles.
Charles was the first to be knocked out of the race for the title too many mistakes by Ferrari's strategy team losing him his opportunity by the midway point of the season yet again. George was the next no mistakes by him or by Mercedes's strategy and yet during the second half of the season his chances slipped away each weekend the car underneath him and his teammate just not being able to keep up with the front-running McLaren and Red Bull.
The battle had got tougher the closer they approached the end of the season, no one team seemed to be on top both Lando and Max switching between first and second in many of the sessions. Lando was going after his first championship, spurred on by a desire to prove himself and make it, and Max was going after his third. The constructors had been snatched by Red Bull in Mexico meaning Lando's attention would solely be on his chances at his own championship. You knew that he felt the pressure that was on him, not just the pressure that the team, the fans and the media put on him but the pressure he put on himself to prove that he could do it.
You were sat in the McLaren hospitality waiting for your boyfriend to emerge from his driver room alongside his trainer, you had migrated to the hospitality knowing that Lando needed to focus before the session began and you would just be in the way within the small room that each driver on the grid had. You perked up seeing Lando and Jon emerge from the corridor and walk through towards you. Jon patted Lando's shoulder and muttered a few words before sending you a quick smile and walking towards the garage. Lando pulled you into his body, wrapping his arms around you and pressing a kiss to your hair. You pulled away slightly to give him a kiss.
Lando smiled down at you taking your hand as you both walked towards the garage, upon entering your hand left his grasp as he gently nudged you towards the seat waiting for you as he approached Will, his engineer to take a final look at the data before qualifying began.
The final laps of qualifying were soon to begin, Lando was sitting third in the pile having put his first banker lap in on a pair of old softs from the previous session, he was backed by Daniel who was currently sitting in P7 one of his best qualifying this season. Lando's car was sat in the garage, tyre blankets on a new, fresh softs ready and waiting to go. Lando was taking another glance at data from his previous lap to see where he can improve.
Besides you were his family, his Mum and Dad were directly beside you and his siblings were sitting on seats behind you Oli and Sav were murmuring quietly to each other, little Mila was soon turning 3 and so was asleep on Oli's lap. Lando's car was fired up and the blankets were taken off his tyres as he waited for the OK to go out on track.
The garage was silent with bated breath as Lando began the final qualifying lap of the season, Max had already finished his lap and so everything lay on him. Everyone's eyes were glued to the screen in the garage showing the papaya car driving around the track. The first sector turned purple and within a split second, a yellow flag was thrown for the second sector the camera changing from following Lando to pictures of the Alpine of Alonso bedded into the wall at T7.
Everyone let out a noise of disbelief, Lando's chances of getting pole were gone, there wasn't going to be enough time to get another lap in and so he would be starting the championship-deciding race from P3 behind both Max and Charles. You watched as he drove back to Parc Ferme the session having ended early. Mechanics from his garage left to go and meet him, you and his family following the papaya group.
