It's time, It's Rush Week! Six days, seven events, all day tabling. As a Sorority we been planning for this all summer. Even as a Greek system this Rush was going to be bigger and better than anyone we'd ever had. Dress code approved, Greek show case practiced, flyers printed! Go, go, go!
We all wait anxiously to see how many girls would show up for the first event. We had set up a candy themed event with large lollipops and hard candy decorations. All the girls wore pink shirts with black skirts and nude heals. We all had straight hair and fake eyelashes on. You don't know how to put on fake eyelashes? Come early, another girl will do it for you. We looked like 16 versions of the plastic's from 'Mean Girls', just with big smiles.
Each girl Was assigned a different topic to speak about with the PNM's (potential new members). When girls arrived, we all took a deep inhale, time to shine! This was nothing like the half put together Rush I went to.
We were so happy with the number of girls that came. We set up a speed dating table and talked about our assigned topics. Some talked about Winterland, others about hobbies. My topic was photography.
After the event was over, we all sat in a circle eating the remaining candy. We excitedly talked about the girls we liked and how good the event went. But this was day one, six more events to go. We took notes on the girls, we wanted to impress them, but they needed to impress us too.Wednesday was Formal night, a bit miss named, because it was cocktail attire. But it was the most important night of Rush. It was the night we truly showed off what Omega Nu was about. It was the night that made me want to join less than a year earlier.
All the girls were in their little black dresses with pearl necklaces on. We had Tiffany's blue glittered high heels on that we made at a sisterhood. It completed the " Breakfast at Tiffany's" theme.
We started the night with all the actives in front of the door, some standing and others kneeling in front. Once the PMN's were brought up we performed a door chant. We clapped and had hand motions, it was highly rehearsed. I still know that chant by heart; O.M.E.G.A, E. G.A.E.G.A. Another national Sorority tradition Alex had found in her research.
Once the PMN's were in I started getting nervous about the slide show. I had added music, but it didn't always play.
After everyone got their food and blue lemonade Tiara gave a speech. Then we played the slide show, and my fear came true. The slide show looked great with the personal photo shoots and pictures from events. The first song played then the second one didn't play, it was silent! I tried laughing through it and only really caught my breath when the third song started.Rather than that misfortune the rest of the night went great. All the actives took turns standing up talking about what the Sorority meant to them. I found myself on my feet crying over how close I felt to Mary. The Sorority had changed my life in less than a year.
During Formal night something else was going on. We were giving out secret invitations to Preference night, a private event. Every active had one invite to give to there " Rush Crush", a girl that you had bonded with or stood out to you.Pref night arrived, actives in coral dresses and gold heals and jewelry. We decorated the front porch of the union building and had two hot guys shirtless with black pants and bow ties to wait on the special selected girls.
We made each girl stand up and show a talent. I remember one girl singing really bad. But this was again the start of a new tradition. We planned games and had cupcakes. It was the most glamorous event we had next to formal night.
After no one wanted to leave, we couldn't believe how well the week had gone. Not to say we weren't tired or missing class or missing work. But we felt like a real national Sorority!
Rush Week ended with interviews and bids went out. All together it was a successful Rush!
More coming soon!
