Although both Touya and Shoto were strong, their father, King Enj, only took pride of Shoto. Touya sword was more powerful than his father however he was believed to not be a perfect match for it since he always brunt himself. He was the oldest and Shoto was the youngest out of their family with their other two siblings, Natsuo and Fuyumi. However since King Enji knew that he would have to give Touya the title of King even though he wanted to give it to Shoto. So he trained both of them brutally.
King Enji only trained Touya so he could be a strong King and help his own reputation to not be the father of the weakest King in history. For Shoto he hoped that his 'master piece' would become an amazing knight and surpass All might's sword. Along with Touya, he neglected the other two children deciding to hide them from the public and pretend to not have four children but two. He couldn't hid Touya because everyone knew that he would be the next King.
So as I said he brutally trained them both without anyone knowing. He also abused them and his wife making her lose her mind. He trained Touya and Shoto so much that Touya was burning himself and Shoto was vomiting everyday. Everyone in the family hated Enji but they couldn't tell anyone outside their family because they were afraid.
One day King Enji took Touya to the woods to improve his sword. Touya (as usual) was burning himself until al of a sudden his flames went out of control and brunt him like crazy. He screamed in pain for help to his father. 'Dad couldn't be that bad to leave his son to death' he thought but he was wrong. King Enji backed away and fled the forest leaving his dying son. Next day he announced Touya to be dead. When he was questioned on how his son died he lied saying "He went to the forest in the night to train himself and his flames were out of control".
