y/n pov:
I can't believe it, I'm finally here, California. I picked up a box and walked up to my new room. I unpacked my glove, bat, and a bunch of baseballs, some even signed by my grandpa, George "Babe" Ruth. I have one ball in a special glass case that's signed by his whole team. No, I've never met him before, but he knew that one day this was going to get passed to his grandchild, and it did.
As I set up my room and had finally finished, I decided I was going to change and walk around to see if possibly I could find a baseball field. I did play softball back in New York, but I much preferred baseball, mostly because guys see a big difference and I like showing them up. I finally changed into some high waisted jean, a black tank top, black pf flyers and an open buttoned Babe Ruth jersey
I grabbed my glove and bolted downstairs, putting on my New York Yankees hat on the way. "DAD! I'M GOING TO LOOK AROUND! I'LL BE HOME BEFORE DARK!" I shouted. "ALRIGHT CHAMP BE SAFE! LOVE YOU!" My dad shouted back. I yelled a quick 'love you!' as I ran out the door. As I left, I saw a boy around my age, but I think a little younger leave his house that was right across from mine. As an attempt to make friends I ran over to him with a smile.
"Hi! I'm Y/n Ruth, I just moved in and seeming as you moved in too, I was wondering if you wanted to explore with me, I'm trying to find a baseball field." I greeted. The boy looks up at me and smiled brightly. "I'm Scotty Smalls. I would love to explore with you, let me grab my glove!" He spoke. I nodded as he ran inside.
He came back a few minutes later and we took of walking. In order to break the tension, I blurted out a random question. "Who's your favorite baseball player?" Smalls thought for a second before shrugging. "I'm not too into baseball but my dad likes it, so I think it'll be fun to learn." He confessed.
"I could teach you if you want! It would be s-" I was cut off by a loud crack of a baseball hitting a bat. Me and Scotty both looked at each other before running in the direction it came from. Soon we came across an old baseball diamond, as eight boys were playing a game. Me and Scotty watched as they played for a few minutes before a ball came soaring through the air straight towards Scotty.
"Catch it, Scotty!!" I yelled. He raised his glove and ran backwards but tripped over his foot and fell causing all but one of the boys to start laughing. I helped up Scotty and he ran off to get the ball. He came back to me and tried handing the ball to me.
"Throw it Scotty! Show me what you got!" I encouraged. He took a deep breath and got in a throwing stance that was all wrong. He threw the ball, but it only landed a few feet in front of him as the boys except the same one fell to the ground laughing. I watched as Scotty ran off from embarrassment and glared daggers at the boys.
Benny pov:
The unknown girl glared at us all before running to grab the ball. "CATCH THIS DOOFUS!!" She yelled, throwing the ball all the way from way outfield to Ham, who was all the way at home plate as catcher. Everyone stopped laughing when the ball hit him in the chest and caused him to fall from his knees to his back. I watched the y/h/c haired girl run of to find the other boy.
"How-how did she do that?!" Ham asked, clearly just as confused as I am. "Your acting like girls can't play baseball" I mentioned. "I don't know about you, but she seemed badass." Denunez mumbled loud enough for us to hear. "Imagine what Phillips would look like if we had her on our team and beat him." Squints stated.
"If they live on my street, I'm inviting them tomorrow. But for now, I think ol' ham here needs a break from being hit so hard." I said, causing a bunch of mummers agreeing.
As I was walking home, I saw the two people from earlier and only then did I realize the girl had a Babe Ruth jersey on, which made me smile. Just then did I take on everything about her, her y/h/l y/h/c hair, and y/e/c eyes that sparkle in the sun. She was really pretty, BUT I don't like her! We never even fully met...yet. As her and the boy were talking, I made my way towards them.
They both looked at me questioningly as I sat by them. "I saw you guys earlier and was wondering if you wanted to come with me to the sandlot tomorrow?" The girl seemed to brighten up but soon stopped and looked at the boy who I just realized had a black eye. "I'm only coming if Scotty comes, so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE COME SCOTTY!!!" She begged.
Scotty shook his head, "Y/n I can't, my glove is ripped you know this!" Dang it Scotty. "I have an extra one." I stated, making y/n, I think, give Scotty puppy eyes. God I don't know what he's thinking about, I could never say no to those. "Fine! But if I get another black eye you owe me!"
"Yes! Thanks Scotty!" Y/n jumped, I guess she saw my confusion because she sat down and faced me. "After we left I tried playing catch with him and he ended up getting a black eye." She explained. I just nodded.
"Oh! I'm-uhm I'm B-Benjamin Rodriguez, but everyone calls me Benny." I smiled. Y/n and Scotty smiled back. "Well that's Scott Smalls, or as I call him Scotty." She explained. "And I'm Y/n Ruth!" She exclaimed smiling brightly.
"Wait, Ruth like Babe Ruth?" I asked. Y/n smiled and nodded. "Yup, he my granddad even though I never got a chance to meet him." She replied. "No way! I love him. He's like my idol even now still." I added. "I have a bunch of signed balls from him! I have like 11, so you can have on if you like." I immediately brightened up, nodding vigorously. She laughed and got up. "You could come over if you like so we can get it. I live right there." She then pointed to the house next to mine.
"Awesome, we're neighbors!" I exclaimed. She nodded then turned to Smalls. "I'll see you tomorrow, Scotty! Bye!" We waved and started walking to her house, as we walked in we walked inside we were greeted by a golden retriever wearing a blue bandanna with the word "Fireflies" on it,
"Hey what's with the fireflies thing?" I asked as we started walking up to her room after petting her, yes it was a her, her name was Roxanne. "Oh that was the name of my old softball team." She explained. When we finally entered her room it was filled with different posters of famous baseball players and a bunch of pictures with her and what looked like to be her old softball team.
As I sat on her bed, she looked for one of the balls while I looked at the pictures. "You sure love baseball, don't you?" I commented. "Yeah, I always loved played baseball during recess a lot and almost every day during the summer. Plus, my grandpa was- y'know." She explained. "Ahah!" She shouted and threw me a baseball, which after a quick examination was really sighed by Babe Ruth.
"𝑊𝑜𝑎ℎ." I breathed. I looked up at her and smiled the biggest smile ever. "This is amazing! Thanks so much Y/n!" I shouted standing up from her bed. "You're welcome, it's not like it's my only one. It's almost dinner time so you should probably get home, I'll walk you out." I nodded and we left her room, talking about Babe Ruth the whole way.
When I left her house and walked into mine, I was smiling like an idiot. Sure, I had just gotten the best gift of all for free, but there was something about Y/n that is just amazing. As soon as I entered the kitchen I saw my sister, Kimmie, smirking.
"I saw you with that new girl Benny. What's got you smiling so much?" She asked. My eyes widened as my cheeks heated up. "What? Nothing! She just gave me a baseball signed by BABE RUTH! SHES HIS GRANDDAUGHTER!" I yelled making her eyes widen. Before she could say anything I ran to my room and flopped on my bed.
Y/n pov:
When Benny left I went to my dads office and sat on the ground near his desk. "Hey dad? I gotta question." I asked nervously. "What's up champ?" "Well when I was walking around today I made a friend before I left and he kinda ended up embarrassing him self in front of a bunch of boys at a old baseball diamond so I threw the ball at the catcher than ran off. So uhm then one of the boys who wasn't laughing came and invited us to play tomorrow and I think it's everyday too so can I go?" I asked, fiddling with the bottom of my jersey. "Under one condition. You make sure I eventually meet them, ok?" He asked and I immediately stood up and hugged him.
"Deal! Thanks dad love you!" I yelled running back to my room. I set an alarm for 7 am just in case then changed and went to bed, excited for tomorrow
