Dawn came slowly, waking us from our disturbing nightmares. The teacher's lounge was a great place to sleep in because it had sofas, food and also because it was one of the cleanest place to sleep in. The down side of sleeping in the teacher's lounge was that it smelt of fart bombs and sweat. There was also a giant painting of the school principal. She had a chubby figure and was pale in colour. Her hair was as white as the clouds whilst her eyes were beady black. She wore a serious face but with the school looking like it does, with paint covered walls and muddy floors...maybe she wasn't serious at all.
We packed our things back into our suitcases and got ready to go but just as we were about to open the door, it opened by itself. The opened door revealed someone uncanningly familiar. My parents and I froze on the spot. My mum was the first to recover.
"Ah, you must be Principal Sheeply."
"And you are..."
"Oh!" My mum gasped, "I'm sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. My name's Lana Young. I was sent here by Principal Hettingham, from Phoenix."
"Ah, yes, that's right. Is she doing alright?"
"I believe she is doing well although the school isn't..."
"Well, that's unfortunate," Sheeply suddenly started to eye us suspiciously, "and they are..?" She pointed rudely towards dad and me.
"This is my husband, Benjamin Young, and," my mum turned and placed her hand lightly on my shoulder, "this is my daughter Bernice Young." I was lost for something to say so I just grinned at Principal Sheeply, hoping she would get a good impression of me. Sheeply seemed to fit her name perfectly, her appearance and the way she acts...just like a sheep.
"Hmmm, now that we've that sorted out, I have to ask you another question: what are you doing here so early in the morning with your entire luggage and bad breaths?" Sheeply's face was stern and it showed no sign of humour.
"Do we have bad breath?" My dad smelled his breath as grimaced.
"Well, we, umm, came to the school early because we just came off the plane and..." I could tell my mum was mentally whacking herself for some excuse.
"We didn't want mum to be late for her first day on the job." I could see my mum's head bopping up and down but the principal didn't seem to believe me. She gave me a hard and stern look then did the same to my mother. Knowing her, she would not be able to stand the pressure so she told the truth straight out.
"Eh, well, you see, we didn't have any place to sleep for the night and so we kind of slept here..." Muffled laughter came from Sheeply's lips. We all stared at her.
"So you slept here for the night?!?" Her laughter became louder and tears came rolling down her cheeks.
"Err, yeah." My mum was freaked out from this sudden burst of laughter. I guess it wasn't the reaction any one of us was expecting.
"I like you, Lana Young," Sheeply grabbed my mum's hands, "welcome aboard." Sheeply's toothy grin and tight grasp made my mum yelp with surprise.
"Really?" My mum's eyes lit up.
"Yehp, in fact, I'm going to organise you a place to live right now so you don't have to sleep here." Principal Sheeply grabbed my mum and pulled her out of the room. Dad and I, again, had no choice but to follow them. The organisations didn't take long so we were out and on the streets, looking for the right house. After we opened the grand door to the apartment, we settled in quick. The room I chose out had a massive window with a sight that was so beautiful that it stopped my breath.
"Bernie, hurry up and get ready for school, otherwise you'll be late!" Dad was calling me Bernie again but I didn't take it to heart since I was already running late. I took a shower, trying to scrub the disgusting scent of fart bombs off my body but the scent still lingered there. Already running late, I got dressed and packed my bag, determined to get out of school safe and sound on the first day. Still not used to the new surroundings, I found myself getting lost in the apartment.
"Bernice," my mum called out, "hurry, you're going to make me late too!" Following the sound of her voice, I soon found myself out of the apartment with my mum.
"So, first day of school, are you hyped?" My mm chirped cheerfully as we opened the doors to the cab and sat down.
"Nope, not one bit."
"What?! Why not?"
"Mum, I'm pretty sure your definition of cute guys and mine are completely different."
"Hey! Did I mention cute guys?"
"No, but you implied it." I groaned as my stomach rumbled.
"You want to stop by for some food?"
"Nah, I'm okay. We're going to be late!"
As we stopped at a place called, Haines Senior High. I waved goodbye to mum as the cab drove off without me. Slowly, I trudged into the school, feeing gloomy and down. Walking towards the office, I saw an over-confident guy surrounded by girls wearing the school polo shirt with 2 of their first two buttons undone, showing a bit of cleavage and really short skirts. I stared at myself in the reflection of the office door. I was wearing the school uniform as well but it seemed different. My skirt was half-way down my thighs which wasn't very short nor very long and on top of the school polo, which I wore properly with all the buttons done except the top, I wore a black vest. My hair wasn't curled nor straightened like theirs. It was black with a hint of brown and messy, just the way I like it. My eyes were a shade of light brown, and my skin was lightly tanned. I stood there idly until a voice broke my train of thought.
"Are you done checking yourself out yet?" It was the guy who was surrounded by all the girls. Looking up close, he didn't seem very handsome as he did from afar. His hair had too much hair spray and was unnaturally straight and his eyes were the colour of poo. He was only a bit taller than me but my shoes made me they same height as him. I wrinkled my nose at the sight. His uniform had lipstick stains all over it and was ruffled everywhere, as if he was attacked by some fearsome beast.
"So are you, like, done checking me out cause I have to go in." He smirked. I was right, he was over-confident. I faked smiled at him, and then purposely stepped onto his toe making him scream in pain. I opened the door to the office as the lady at the front was smiling at me.
"I'm the new transfer student, from Phoenix." I smiled back at her. She grabbed some papers from a tall pile of papers and handed it to me.
"Here are the maps of the school, your schedule, locker combination and location and list of your teachers and subjects."
"Thanks." I walked out, seeing the guy still hopping up and down from the injury I cause him. I smiled again as I walked over his other foot, enjoying the sound of pain coming from his as he swore.
