Grian looked up from his desk, sudden curiosity striking him as the teacher began speaking.
"Good morning, class! Today I'd like to introduce a new student to our college!" Mr. Calden said a little too excitedly. His face was lit up with joy, nearly jumping in his own shoes. It baffled the whole class. He was never this excited unless it was the last day of school. The year had only just begun. "Class," he began, as a girl walked through the door to stand beside him. A couple people gasped, though Grian just watched with new found confusion. What was so exciting about a new student exactly?
"This is Princess Elenore!" Mr. Clalden said. The rest of the room gasped.
"Hey- I-i told you not to call me that..!" The princess said with slight disappointment. she forced herself to relax- she'd be fine. Calming her stiff muscles she gave an uncertain wave. "Hey..."
The teacher grinned. "Alright, alright, choose any seat you like!" he said. Elenore went straight to the back corner, sitting at the empty desk.
Grian thought for a bit, glancing back at Elenore. A princess huh? She certainly didn't look like one.. Shouldn't they be wearing dresses and not jeans? And where was her crown? Maybe, Grian thought, she just wanted to blend in.
"Wait!" Scar started. Grian looked beside him to the boy in the wheelchair- one of his best friends. "Mr. Calden, do you mean the Princess Elenore? Daughter of the High King?" he asked. Once again the class gasped, most heads turning to the girl in the back. The teacher nodded gleefully.
Elenore buried her red face in her hands as the class erupted in chatter.
"Calm down, calm down, we still have to complete work today if you want to move on or return home!" the teacher said. Grian let out a sigh as the noise quieted down. "Good good, now that we're ready, let's get started with our essays and tests!" he said. Forget quiet. Everyone groaned loudly.
Mr. Calden laughed. "I'm kidding, I'm kidding, we're working with our wings today!" he said. Yep, definitely not quiet. Not with all the shouting and rushing of feet. Scar gently elbowed Grian as his 'see you later' before rolling out on his wheelchair. Already most of the class had emptied to the field outside. "Grian, Elenore, since you two don't have wings you guys can just watch." Mr. Calden said.
The two snapped their heads toward each other. "You don't have wings?" they said in sync.
You see... Everyone had wings. Everybody in the college, everybody in the kingdom. It was a normal thing- everybody was born with them. Some called them wings, while others called them Elytra. But everybody had wings.
"Never had them." Grian said. "I was never born with them."
"Me too." Elenore replied.
"Ooo.. should- should we leave the room? Leave you two alone?" Mumbo asked. He chuckled slightly.
Grian rolled his eyes. "Oh shut it, you know I already have somebody." Grian said.
"And you still never tell us who!" Mumbo replied.
"I'd rather not, you two would be all over me for months if I did!"
"Yes we would, yes we would. Alright, alright. See you on the benches!" Mumbo said, hurrying out of the room behind the rest of the class' students.
"I swear, one day I'm going to tear off that mustache of his..." Grian mumbled.
"Wait what?" Elenore asked.
