There are nearly 33,000 species of fish in the world. Almost half of that number live in freshwater—an astounding level of diversity given that only around .01% of the liquid water on the Earth’s surface is fresh

of the more than 7,000 species that are available to hobbyists, some 5,300 are freshwater species. Around 1,000 freshwater species comprise the bulk of those kept in captivity.

Some fish are over-collected in the wild,

others have been introduced to non-native waterways and have created problems there, and

the collection of aquascaping materials raises further questions of sustainabilit

What is a word for someone who enjoys keeping fish as a hobby?

This hobby is called fishkeeping and the corresponding noun for the hobbyist is fishkeeper.

The generic term used to name person who keeps aquarium is "aquarist",

the hobby is known as "fish keeping",

There is also another term where fish are bred for commercial purposes for selling them for food or fish keeping this is known as pisciculture

This question is like asking what do one call a person who keeps dogs. Does one call him a dog keeper or a pet dog hobbyist. In general I can safely say it is a hobby. Hobby is something that one loves to do in life other than routine errands that needs to be done in order to survive in this world. Coming to this question, in my opinion raising fish in a confined glass cage like space is called aquarium hobby. I call the person who maintains this glass cage is called a hobbyist. He is doing this as he gains some happiness from this hobby.

The main thing that differentiates casual fishkeepers from hobbyists isn't the number of tanks, or the money spent on the hobby, but rather the drive to be informed and educated on the subject. (Thats not to say that all fish kept by hobbyists are in adequate conditions)
